About the project: Shakespeare’s classic tells the tale of King Lear, who in preparation for his old age, divides his power and land between his daughters Goneril and Regan, who pay homage to gain favor, feigning love. The King’s third daughter, Cordelia, is offered a third of his kingdom also, but refuses to be insincere in her praise and affection. She instead offers the respect of a daughter and is disowned by Lear who seeks flattery. Regan and Goneril subsequently break promises to host Lear and his entourage, so he opts to become homeless and destitute, goes insane, and the French King married to Cordelia invades Britain to restore order and Lear’s rule. In a subplot, Edmund, the illegitimate son of Gloucester, betrays his brother and father. Additional info: Needed: 13 actors – 9 men, 4 women. The sides are attached. King of Britain who decides to step down and divide his kingdom among his daughters. Things immediately begin to fall apart and Lear falls into madness, but in the process becomes a better human being.
Eldest daughter of Lear, in a loveless marriage with the Duke of Albany, cold, calculating and ambitious.
Second daughter of Lear, also ambitious but puts on a sweet face, sly and sensuous.
Youngest daughter of Lear and his favorite. Gentle, loving and brave, but too honest for her own good. NOTE: In this production, Cordelia will double as THE FOOL Jestful but melancholy, THE FOOL is the only character who gets away telling Lear the truth.
Husband to Goneril, decent and honest but rather weak of character.
Husband to Regan, ambitious, cunning and brutal, has a wonderful partnership with his wife.
An honorable man, technically a vassal to the Duke of Cornwall, but ultimately loyal to Lear, behavior which costs him grievously.
Bastard son of the Earl of Gloucester. Handsome, charming, very attractive to women, but underneath an ambitious schemer who comes near to winning the crown of Britain.
Legitimate son of the Earl of Gloucester, betrayed by his brother Edmund and condemned as a criminal, he spends most of the play disguised as a madman.
Obsequious and cowardly toady to Goneril.
Suitor for the hand of Cordelia, pleasant enough but abandons her when Lear denies her a share of the kingdom. NOTE: the actor playing Burgundy will double as multiple characters in the play.
