About the project: "Ponderosa" follows Tom, a 25 year old with early-stage schizophrenia, as he fixates on chopping down a Ponderosa Pine in the neighboring woods - a task he ties to his self-worth, security, and independence from his burnt-out mother. This brings him near- death in the sub-freezing forest, but hope arrives when Tom overcomes the inner voices and accepts help from a stranger. Yet, the cycle continues as Tom returns to the tree, encapsulating the illness's hallmark: one step forward, two steps back. Rate: Paid. SAG Micro Budget Agreement. Above all, Tom is a lesson in resilience. Burdened by intense thoughts of harm (spurred on from his psychosis illness), Tom is faced with sorting out the real from the unreal, what can be trusted from what cannot. Through the swinging emotions of frustration, fear, anguish, panic, and self- hatred, Tom manages to stay laser focused on one task chopping down a tree in the forest. If he can do this, he can build a shelter, he can survive on his own, and he need not burden his mother any longer.
Same race as Tom. Sandra is a naturally loving mother weary from years of compounding stress factors weighing down on her shoulders. A single parent, her patience and care are routinely tested as her only child suffers from psychosis which impacts all areas of life. Despite dealing with financial stress, a broken health care system, being overworked and under-nurtured, Sandra's maternal warmth does not waver, completing the picture of caregiver fatigue in American society.
Peter is avid hiker and adventurer, recently retired he now spends his free time enjoying nature. In this story Peter is a friendly stranger that comes across Tom in his our of need. His generosity of spirit, offering Tom a ride home becomes a turning moment for Tom.
