Tracy Turnblad, a quirky teenager with a plus-sized hairdo has a big dream to dance on The Corny Collins Show on national television. Her successful audition transforms her into a local celebrity, but she faces discrimination because of her weight, her choice in friends and her hairdo. Tracy becomes determined to use her influence to push for social change and racial integration in the show. With memorable songs such as Good Morning, Baltimore and You Can’t Stop The Beat, the show continues to be a widely produced musical. Its timeless message that everyone should be treated equally regardless of social, cultural and physical differences, is as relevant today as it was in the sixties. Hairspray The Musical is a feel-good comedy and winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Score, as well as four Laurence Olivier Awards. Hairspray was also made into (2) Films and (1) Musical. She doesn’t fit the common “60’s silhouette”, but she’s self-secure, talented & can dance with the best of them! The role of Tracy requires an excellent singer, dancer, actor & has wonderful stage presence that captures the audience's hearts.
Corny Collins, the host of "The Corny Collins Show”, is a Baltimore celebrity. Corny is a charmer & should be a performer with great energy who is unafraid of being in the center spotlight. Corny should be a strong actor, singer & dancer.
Penny Pingleton is Tracy's fun and sheltered sidekick. She is a young lady caught between her mother's very strict rules and her own wants and desires to be just another teenage girl. This character has a sweet voice & great comedic instincts.
Amber Von Tussle is a prom queen nightmare! She is definitely "The Corny Collins Show" favorite, but she is competitive and has a bad attitude. Amber is a great performer & should be a strong singer, dancer & actor that audiences love to hate.
Link Larkin is Baltimore's biggest heartthrob & Tracy's dream guy. Link is considered the best performer in town, so directors are looking for a young man who is a triple threat - a great actor, singer and dancer. Think of any teenage idol who is able to reduce girls to tears.
Seaweed J. Stubbs is the object of Penny's affections, and together, they are determined to defy the segregation laws of the 1960s. Seaweed can do it all! This is a great role for an experienced young performer who can sing, dance & act. Actor of color.
Little Inez Stubbs is Seaweed's little sister and a great breakout role for an eager performer. Little Inez gets her moment in the spotlight as she is a great singer and dancer. Inez has a quiet exterior who can and will be bold when the opportunity comes. Actor of color.
