"Hairspray" Musical Needs Performers
Auditions for "Hairspray" show. Looking for actors. ONLY LOCAL TALENT WILL BE CONSIDERED. Please see the breakdown below. Additional info: Directors will ask you to prepare 32 bars from two contrasting songs and bring sheet music for both. In most cases they will only have you sing one of the two songs you’ve prepared. Directors do not require all Auditioners to stay for dance auditions. For those wishing to be cast in minor roles or ensemble roles, you may leave after your vocal audition with no penalty. Callbacks for lead roles will be held on Sunday, January 12th from 2-4:30pm by invitation only. They will send out invites no later than midnight on Saturday, January 11th and will not require any extra prepared music or sides for the callback. Casting notices for lead roles will go out no later than 6pm on Sunday, January 12th and you will be given 24 hours to confirm the role before the full cast announcement on Monday, January 13th. The first rehearsal is mandatory for all and will be held on Friday, January 17th from 6-9pm. Rehearsals are held on Wednesday and Friday Nights with some weekend rehearsals in March. All cast members must be available for three full cast rehearsals in the evenings on April 5th, 6th, and 9th, and shows on April 11th at 7:30pm, April 12th at 6:30pm, and April 13th at 2:00pm. Our story’s unsuspecting protagonist, she is large and in charge. Confident, talented, and incredibly determined. A romantic with a good heart and desire to cut up the dance floor. Always on top of the latest trends. Vocal range: Belting Mezzo-Soprano. G3-G5. Singing style: characterized by a powerful belt with a bright, optimistic tone. Important songs: “Welcome to the 60s,” “Good Morning Baltimore,” and “I Can Hear the Bells.”
The star heartthrob on Corny Collins’ show. He is extremely attractive and talented. Hoping to get his big break with a recording contract, he unexpectedly falls for Tracy. Vocal range: Baritone/Bari-Tenor. G3-A5. Singing style: strong pop singer with a high Bari-Tenor and strong falsetto. Important songs: “It Takes Two.”
Tracy’s best friend and dorky sidekick. Not the brightest girl, but she has good intentions. Bursting to get free of her mother’s dominating control, she falls for Seaweed with childlike curiosity. Vocal range: Belting Mezzo-Soprano. A3-G5. Singing style: strong, high-belting contemporary theater/Pop voice with a quirky flare and good comedic timing. Important songs: “Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now.”
Link’s girlfriend and Tracy’s nemesis. She is pretty, thin, shallow, snobby, and racist. Can’t dance but is expected to win Miss Baltimore Hairspray. Always feels the need to be the center of attention. Vocal range: Mezzo-Soprano. A3-F5. Singing style: Belting contemporary theater/Pop voice, occasionally nasal/shrill tone. Important songs: “Cooties”
The charismatic host of the Corny Collins’ Show. Good looking and smooth talking, he is a genuinely nice guy both on and off camera. Vocal range: Tenor/Bari-Tenor. D3-A4. Singing style: Smooth, warm tenor with a classic radio/TV voice. Important songs: “It’s Hairspray” and “Nicest Kids in Town.”
Tracy’s classmate and friend, who is discriminated against due to his skin color. He is cocky but surprisingly lovable. Talented in song and dance. He falls for Penny. Vocal range: Belting Tenor. F3-D5. Singing style: High and Belting, with a bright and spirited tone. Important songs: “Run and Tell That.”
Seaweed and Little Inez’s mother, she also appears as the Guest DJ on the Corny Collin’s Negro Day show. Big, blonde, beautiful and proud of it. She is sassy and confident. Vocal range: Belting Alto. F3-E5. Singing style: rich, gospel-style, and soulful. Important songs: “I Know Where I’ve Been” and “Big, Blonde, and Beautiful.”
Seaweed’s little sister. Spunky, tough, streetwise, outgoing, and older than her years. Vocal range: Belting Soprano/Mezzo-Soprano. Singing style: strong, high belting with a childlike quality. Important songs: “Run and Tell That.”
Tracy’s big and blonde mother. She is a working housewife who has lost her confidence and dream to be a plus-size clothing designer. Boisterous and commanding. Vocal range: Contralto/Tenor. F3-G5. Singing style: sweet and sassy with good comedic timing. Important songs: “Welcome to the 60s” and “(You’re) Timeless to Me.”
Tracy’s simpleminded and kind father. He owns a joke shop and supports his daughter in spite of everything else. He also loves his wife, Edna, very much. Vocal range: Baritone. A3-A5. Singing style: gentle and goofy. Important songs: “(You’re) Timeless to Me.”
Amber’s mother and the director of Corny Collin’s show. She is a devious taskmaster and snobby racist. The former Miss Baltimore Crabs will go to any length to ensure her daughter is the next big thing. Vocal range: Belting Mezzo-Soprano/Alto. G3-E5. Singing style: strong belt/mix, a bit old-fashioned. Important songs: “(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs.”
Penny’s strict mother. Very conservative, controlling, and close-minded. Vocal range: Mezzo-Soprano/Alto. D4-B4. Acting skills more important.
4-8 individuals to be featured in ensemble numbers. Will also be prioritized for smaller speaking roles over other ensemble members. Strong singing ability not necessary.
