The arrival of Inspector Goole interrupts the party with the news of a grizzly suicide. He informs those present that they could be complicit. Priestley weaves the styles of a crime thriller and a morality play that invites the audience to judge the characters and reflect on their values of social responsibility, age, gender, and class.
