About the project: "By the Sea" is an introspective drama that starts with Noah, an aimless drifter whose girlfriend has just left him but feels rather unaffected, he continues to drift through life working as a contract photographer for a start-up travel agency taking photos of more undocumented spots of Vancouver until he meets the free-spirited Hanna. Their shared interactions and quiet moments together starts to shape a new perspective in Noah but when unexpected tragedy occurs, Hanna vanishes and Noah is stuck alone. He reverts back to old habits and old relationships continuing to live in monotony but Hanna’s presence starts to pervade Noah’s life and forces him to confront his own decisions and re-examine his place in the world. Korean-English(Bilingual)/Agreeable with smoking Noah lives day-by-day with no real purpose, he’s not sad about it, he’s just living. Inside, he longs for connection and companionship which he eventually finds in Hanna but his biggest difficulty is trying to express himself. He is unable to put his emotions into words so he instead responds indifferently to everything whilst internalizing his thoughts.
Agreeable with smoking Hanna is carefree, outgoing but most of all, completely mysterious. She is not one to speak much about herself but she is sure about who she is and what she wants. But of course, she’s only human so she has a vulnerability to her. She acts like a bird, floating and flying around life, capturing what she wants. She cultivates a connection with Noah which slowly grounds her but only temporarily cause a bird can only keep flying and flying.
Noah’s previous girlfriend before meeting Hanna. A bit short-tempered, she is assertive, is prone to leaving often but Noah stays with her cause he isn’t really sure what else to do or say. Grace wants nothing more to be loved and appreciated which Noah did give her, so she keeps coming back.
Probably Noah’s only real close friend he has. David is also care-free, a lot more opinionated than Noah and the one who seems to be willing to be upfront and straightforward with him. But he has his own issues, a troubled marriage and his own insecurities, David wants nothing more than a break from reality.
Korean. The mother of Noah and Amy, she loves her kids more than anything but has lived with regrets as a mother. She worries about her kids and their futures but also feels a sense of remorse because she doesn’t believe she was a great mother growing up so with the death of the father, she feels the weight of responsibility starting to weigh down on her.
