About the project: "Legends of the Highway" unveils the untold story of the Florida Highwaymen, a collective of 26 self-taught African American artists who, in the segregated South of the 1950s and '60s, forged their own path to success. Focusing on eight pioneering members through the eyes of Mary Ann Carroll, the official First Lady of the Highwaymen, the film highlights how these artists, guided by the mentorship of renowned landscape painter A.E. Backus and led by Alfred Hair and Harold Newton, transformed the art world. Alongside Roy R.A. McClendon, James Gibson, Samuel Newton, Livingston "Castro" Roberts, George Buckner, Alphonso Moran, and Al Black, these artists captured Florida's breathtaking landscapes and sold their paintings along the state's highways, circumventing a traditional art world that often excluded them.
