When she catches her mother fleeing the house she falls apart and is faced with her younger and older self who attempt to help her understand her place in life. Rate: Union and non union. Helen has spent her life with a man who turned into a monster. She clings to her life and her strength to keep her daughter safe. She finally has the courage to escape with her kid but has to go alone to set up their new life. She is caught by her daughter leaving one night and has to let her believe she's not coming back. She is heartbroken but knows she is doing the right thing.
Jack is an abusive husband and father. He's learned how to be these things from his father and his father before him. He finds comfort in hurling abuses at his wife and daughter having no other model for how to be. He makes no effort to be a better man.
Estella has just turned 17 and she is spending yet another birthday under the abusive and total control of her father. She is desperate to get out but lacks the ability to escape. She ultimately learns to trust herself and her inner strength to survive and live for her own future no matter what.
