Annie Sullivan is a working-class Irish girl hired from the Perkins Institution for the Blind to be Helen's teacher. Self-reliance, stubbornness, and humor are among the personal qualities that help to aid in her task.
Kate Keller is a young Southern gentlewoman, the wife of Captain Keller, mother of Helen and Mildred, and stepmother to James. She is a loving mother and Annie's early ally in the struggle to teach Helen.
Captain Arthur Keller, often referred to as Keller, is a Southern gentleman, former captain in the Confederate army, and patriarch of the Keller family. He is married to Kate and is a father to James, Helen, and baby Mildred.
James Keller is an indolent young man and Captain Keller's son by his first marriage. James resents his stepmother Kate, and dislikes his half-sister Helen. He is skeptical of Annie Sullivan's potential for success in teaching Helen.
Aunt Ev is Captain Keller's sister, a very proper Southern lady who does not approve of the rough-mannered teaching methods of Annie Sullivan. While she pities Helen and thinks something must be done to help the child, she is upset by the strict, no-nonsense nature of Annie's instruction.
Viney is a servant in the Keller home and mother of Martha and Percy. She is thoughtful, observant, and protective of Kate Keller. She is also kind to Helen and helps take care of her. Viney exhibits an upbeat nature and handles difficulties with wry humor.
