In his 60s, Gerald takes it upon himself to fake his own death instead of dealing with his family. He claims it was because of their financial burden, when in reality he just wanted to be free of them entirely. Although Gerald is a psychologically abusive father, he genuinely did care for his children in their youth. What they recount as heinous deeds, he remembers as his own special way of trying to love them.
