Levine, this production of Fiddler on the Roof will be profoundly actor-driven, with a unique emphasis on the themes of “bearing witness” and “never forgetting.” Levine’s vision centers on the idea that this story is not just about the individual characters in each scene, but about the entire community, unified in their shared experiences of upheaval and resilience. By keeping actors on stage at all times, this production will establish a powerful sense of communal witnessing and collective memory, ensuring that the interconnectedness of each character’s journey is always at the forefront, thus allowing the audience to feel the weight of history and the enduring impact of these stories. The actors’ constant presence serves as a living reminder that every element of the narrative is crucial, reinforcing the deep cultural ethos of remembrance and resilience. 7 roles

TEVYEBoth genders36-59 y.o.All ethnicities

Male-identified character. Hardworking and pious Jewish dairyman struggling with the shifting attitudes in 1900s Russia. Husband to GOLDE, father to five daughters. Robust, humorous, and charismatic, likable from the moment we meet him, even through his moments of struggle, stubbornness, and sometimes rage.

TZEITELBoth genders18-25 y.o.All ethnicities

Female-identified character. The eldest daughter. She is devoted and dutiful - but wary of having the choice of husband taken from her hands. She is in love with MOTEL the tailor, a gentle and sweet man with no money. She is a good and helpful daughter who is devoted to her family and generally listens to her parents - but when it comes to matters of the heart, she can be incredibly stubborn, and incredibly convincing.

HODELBoth genders18-23 y.o.All ethnicities

Female-identified character. The second eldest daughter. She is intelligent and opinionated, coming to head with a young student, PERCHIK. Almost in spite of herself, she falls in love with him and eventually leaves Anatevka to join him in Siberia.

YENTEBoth genders30-59 y.o.All ethnicities

Female-identified character. The meddling matchmaker. She is a widow and village busybody who knows all of the town gossip. Despite her often meddlesome nature, she is funny, kind, warm, and caring. Strong comedic timing and delivery, as well as experience with dialects.

MOTELBoth genders18-30 y.o.All ethnicities

Male-identified character. The poor and meek tailor who shares a deep love with TZEITEL. Sensitive and nervous, yet sincere, appealing, and kind. Excellent tenor who sings "Miracle of Miracles".

LAZAR WOLFBoth genders30-49 y.o.All ethnicities

Male-identified character. The town butcher and wealthiest citizen who wishes to marry TZEITEL. Gruff in approach, he and TEVYE have a complicated relationship. He is expansive vocally and physically. Will possibly cover TEVYE.

ENSEMBLE / SINGERS / DANCERSBoth genders18-56 y.o.All ethnicities

A diverse company of terrific singers who move very well (or dance well, a plus) to play various characters of Anatevka. Many ensemble tracks will understudy principal roles. Please be sure to review the synopsis of this notice, as it contains helpful context to the vision of the production. Principal understudies will be assigned to the ensemble players in advance of rehearsals beginning.
