Actors Needed for "Arcadia" Play Audition
Seeking non equity actors for production of "Arcadia". Please see the breakdown below. About the project: The show travels back and forth between 1809 and the present. Mathmatical prodegy, thirteen year-old Lady Thomasina, conceives of a mathematical formula for everything under the guidance of her tutor, Septimus Hodge. Hodge is maneuvering a household in upheaval due to numerous infidelities, some involving himself and some his friend Lord Byron. Present day scenes depict several scholars using novel research techniques to uncover the truth about Lord Byron's actions in 1809. (Somehow it all comes does to the second law of thermo dyamics - the loss of heat.) The play explores the nature of truth and time, the difference between Enlightenment and Romantic thinking, and the disruptive influence of sexual attraction on all of our lives. A wonderful opportunity to dig into this complex play. Additional info: Please bring a headshot and resume. Auditions will consist of readings (sides) from the show. Call backs on Wednesday, September 11 from 7-10 pm. Arcadia performs November 1-10. If you are interested, please apply.
11 roles
(18 who can play 13 years old and then 16), she is the oldest daughter of the house. Thoughtful, aware, and a mathematical prodigy, she has a disarming innocence that easily coexists with her voracious intellect. **Actress must be at least 18 years old.
Thomasina’s tutor. He is a reasonable and well-educated with a good head on his shoulders. Most importantly he is a good & caring teacher to Thomasina. A bit liberal with his affections, he is clever at navigating challenging social situations.
Thomasina’s mother. Lady Croom rules the Coverly estate with an iron fist. She is strong-willed, stylish, funny, and the center of whatever room she happens to be in.
A self-styled poet and lover, but not great at either (although he believes the opposite). He is passionate and gullible, especially when it comes to his wife.
The landscape designer. He likens himself to being a prophet of the “new aesthetic” that leans towards the gothic. He is a bit of a sycophant, but he’s an able craftsman & a likable gentleman.
(Mid 30s) Brother of Lady Croom. He is a solid military man, who happens to be one of Chater’s wife’s lovers. It is under his auspices that the Chaters' have been invited to Sidley Park. He has a strong sense of right, wrong, and his honor.
Butler for the Coverly home, Sidley Park. He is officious, succinct and aware.
An academic with a best selling book under her belt, studying the garden history of Sidley Park. She is sharp, serious, and a good researcher. Hannah collaborates (warily) with Bernard and also with Valentine, though she rejects the romantic advances of both. She has a good moral compass and good instincts.
An academic who is in the early “still proving himself” stage of his career, and is therefore a bit gung-ho and maybe a bit flamboyant. He has his hypotheses, and will find the nuggets of information that will help prove him right. He’s clever and personable, but not the best with people, occasionally saying the wrong thing.
Young man of the house. A scientist who is able to explain complex ideas well. He has a small crush on Hannah, but assumes that nothing will come of it.
Young lady of the house. She has a crush on Bernard. She is thoughtful, but not in an academic way. She is personable and open to new people and experiences.
