John Punch was an African indentured servant in that became the first African male slave in the Virginia colony after trying to escape his labor contract with two other indentured servants.
VICTOR, known as “Victor the Dutchman”, was an indentured servant in the Virginia colony. In 1640, he ran away with John Punch and James Gregory (the Scotsman) to escape his labor contract. He was sentenced to whippings and four additional years to his indenture.
James Gregory, known as “James Gregory the Scotsman”, was an indentured servant in the Virginia colony. In 1640, he ran away with John Punch and Victor (the Dutchman) to escape his labor contract. He was sentenced to whippings and four additional years to his indenture.
