About the project: "The House She Left" tells the story of Olivia, a reserved girl who returns to her childhood home after her father passes away. Hoping to find the nostalgia she desperately craves, Olivia ventures into a mysterious door which leads her to impossible shifting rooms that will show her her feelings towards her parents and herself. After finding her way through the maze of visions, Olivia decides to embrace her past and forgive her father, finally allowing herself to grieve him. Rate: Non-union. Unpaid. A reserved woman who ran from her childhood home, where she suffered from a rough upbringing. When her father passes away, she is forced to return, and face the past she's so desperately avoided. As her house starts to shift and change, Olivia's inner demons are personified. Through this and navigating the maze that the house becomes, she comes to realizations about herself and her father, eventually forgiving him and allowing herself to grieve his passing.
Luanne is Olivia’s mother. She was an upbeat, lively individual who was plagued by a chronic illness. She knew about this illness since before she and Peter got married, but they decided to keep it a secret from Olivia. She got to live more than she and Peter thought she would, but she did die when Olivia was 6 years old. Throughout the film, Olivia sees a representation of her mother, and is haunted by her voice. Luanne is always out of reach, however.
Olivia’s father was a more reserved man than his wife Luanne. One of Luanne’s final wishes was to keep her illness a secret from Olivia so she would remember her as she was before, which is something that Peter took with him to the grave, literally. Unfortunately, this caused a rift between him and Olivia, and he became more violent and cold. Throughout the film, Olivia sees visions of Peter.
As Olivia’s partner, she has heard no end to stories of Olivia’s tough upbringing. Unfortunately, due to circumstances of life she couldn’t accompany Olivia to visit her childhood home after her father passed away. From a distance, over the phone, Laurie tries to be an anchor for Olivia, trying to keep her grounded as she navigates a difficult time. She’s Olivia’s new world, and throughout the movie Olivia will try to reach out to her multiple times. She’s her comfort and escape.
A spiteful woman who never allowed herself to forgive her parents. She's a person who's stuck in the past, unable to move forwards, making her an angry individual. She has lost her relationship with all the people of her life by not allowing herself to move on. Old Olivia is Olivia's worst fears personified. A potential version of her future if she continues down the path she has been on.
