About the project: The Wedding Singer takes us back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up and a wedding singer might just be the coolest guy in the room. Based on the hit Adam Sandler movie, The Wedding Singer's sparkling new score does for the '80s what Hairspray did for the '60s. Just say yes to the most romantic musical in twenty years. It's 1985, and rock star wannabe, Robbie Hart, is New Jersey's favorite wedding singer. He's the life of the party until his own fiancée leaves him at the altar. Shot through the heart, Robbie makes every wedding as disastrous as his own. Enter Julia, a winsome waitress who wins his affection. As luck would have it, Julia is about to be married to a Wall Street shark, and, unless Robbie can pull off the performance of a decade, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever. (Tenor C5-B2) Robbie Hart is a wedding singer who lives at home with his grandmother, Rosie, in New Jersey. He and Rosie are very close and she offers him solid life advice when he needs it most. Robbie is due to marry his fiancée, Linda, but he is devastated when she leaves him at the altar, claiming that he is not the rockstar that he used to be. Devastation and grief cause him to ruin the next wedding he sings at, and he is lifted out of the dumps by Julia, a friendly waitress.
(Mezzo-Soprano F5-G3) Julia is a waitress in New Jersey. She is best friends with her cousin, Holly, with whom she also works at wedding parties. Julia is dating Glen, a Wall Street banker, but she has serious doubts about the status and future of their relationship. She is shocked when he asks her to marry him, but their engagement does not get rid of her concerns about them as a couple. Julia is in love with the idea of marriage and has dreamed about her big day for a long time.
(Tenor B4-D3) Glen is a Wall Street broker & is engaged to Julia. Although he pops the question in a restaurant renowned as the place to propose, there is no romance to their engagement. Glen regularly cheats on Julia behind her back and enjoys the high-living, wealthy lifestyle that he moves in. He boasts about his promiscuity to Robbie, little realizing that he is in love with Julia. Despite his infidelity, Glen is furious when Robbie gatecrashes his Las Vegas wedding and steals his bride.
(Mezzo-Soprano E5-A3) Holly is Julia’s cousin and her best friend. She works with Julia as a waitress at wedding parties. She encourages Julia’s relationship with Glen, a Wall Street banker, as he offers wealth, security, and a luxurious lifestyle. Although she initially brushes Julia’s concerns aside, she knows that Julia does not truly love Glen. Holly is fun, confident, and mischievous, encouraging Julia to practice her wedding kiss with Robbie.
(Tenor A4-C3) Sammy is one of Robbie’s best friends and the bass player in the wedding band. Along with fellow bandmate George, Sammy tries to lift Robbie out of his grief when he is dumped at the altar, and convince him to plough his emotions into his songwriting. However, their advice backfires when he ruins their next gig. Although he initially encourages Robbie to embrace being single. Sammy realizes that Robbie has fallen for Julia, a waitress who works at the wedding parties.
(Tenor A4-C3) George is Robbie's flamboyantly gay, eccentric friend and keyboardist in the band. Think Boy George! Along with fellow bandmate Sammy, George tries to lift Robbie out of his grief when he is dumped at the altar, and convince him to plough his emotions into his songwriting. However, their advice backfires when he ruins their next gig. Like Sammy, George is single and the two men try to convince Robbie that the single life is the right path.
(Alto C5-C4) Rosie is Robbie’s grandmother and he lives in her basement. She has a close relationship with her grandson and offers him solid life advice when he needs it most. Despite her age, Rosie is determined to be hip and she can really bust out a move! She also proves her rap abilities when she teams up with the wedding band’s keyboardist, George. Rosie has been married for 50 years and celebrates her anniversary with her husband. She is a great role model for Robbie.
(Mezzo-Soprano, Alto Belt D5-A3) Linda begins the show engaged to Robbie, the lead singer in a wedding band. However, she leaves him on the morning of their wedding, claiming that he has not become the rockstar she wanted. She had great plans for Robbie, but she is now frustrated that he is just a wedding singer who still lives with his grandmother. However, Linda keeps Robbie around as a Plan B, and she comes back to him when her plans don’t work out.
