Production of "The Maids" Needs Performers

Edmonton, AB, Canada
ID: 263660Exp: 7/6/2024
Description:

ONLY LOCAL TALENT WILL BE CONSIDERED. Seeking actors for the part of the Mistress in the fall 2024 production of Jean Genet’s "The Maids". More details are below. About the play: Loosely based on the story of the Papin sisters who murdered their employer’s wife and daughter in 1930s France, The Maids explores powerful themes of shame, otherness, transformation, and surveillance. "The Mistress" is an ostentatious socialite whose lover, having recently been arrested, has inspired her fantasies of leaving behind a luxurious life to follow him to a penal colony at the ends of the earth. Given to flights of self-dramatization and self-pity, the Mistress treats the world as a stage and her servants as supporting players in her grand drama. While she’s sincere–never self-aware or phoney–she can simultaneously be capable of casual cruelty, flagrant acts of generosity, and benign neglect. Her feelings are intense, she takes up a lot of oxygen, and she commits to every gesture. Additional information: To be produced in Edmonton under the Canadian Actors Equity agreement “Indie 2.2.” The production dates are as follows: REHEARSALS BEGIN: September 23. TECH: October 18, 19, 20. TECH DRESS: October 22. DRESS REHEARSAL: October 23. PREVIEW: October 24. OPENS: October 25. CLOSES: November 3. When applying, please submit your head shot and resume. Only those selected for an audition will be contacted.
