About the project: SYNOPSIS: Inspired by Motown and R&B legends of the 1960s-70s, Dreamgirls follows the rising stardom of the Dreamettes, an all-girl singing trio from Chicago. The three best friends—the phenomenally talented, but demanding Effie White, the beautiful and appealing Deena Jones, and the eager, romantic Lorrell Robinson—team up with driven, demanding manager Curtis Taylor, who is determined to see their—and his—star rise. As their careers begin to take off, changes are made to ensure their mass appeal to the pop market. Egos are bruised, tempers flare, and hearts are broken in pursuit of stardom. Inspired by the stories of groups such as The Supremes and The Shirelles and featuring many iconic classic songs, Dreamgirls is a love letter to American R&B music and the artists that make such music great. Rate: All roles are paid. Additional info: Those auditioning are asked to prepare a 32-bar selection either from the show or in the same style that shows your vocal range and skill. An accompanist will be provided. While it is preferable that you utilize accompaniment, karaoke tracks are acceptable if you don’t have sheet music. If you sing a capella, you will be asked to sing something with the piano. A note from the director: While everyone will move, not everyone has to be a dancer. There are roles available for African-American and Caucasian actors. This reimagined production is planned to be in the round and immersive. While Dreamgirls is primarily sung-through, priority is bold, fearless, and honest storytelling. Crowd work will be a key feature in the show. Video submissions will be accepted: see the attachment. She is smitten with Curtis from the start and is overcome with anger and jealousy when she senses his growing attraction to Deena. Must move very well. Inspired by Supremes member Florence Ballard and Aretha Franklin. Role requires physical intimacy and onstage kissing.
(Female-identifying, Pop Mezzo-Soprano, F3-A5) The young, thin, beautiful member of the Dreams. Happy singing backup to Effie until Curtis puts her in the lead & grooms her as star of the group. She embodies regal grace & quiet confidence, captivating audiences with her innocence & star power as an unsuspected underdog turned magnetic performer. Must move very well & have star quality. Based upon Motown star & lead Supremes member Diana Ross. Role requires physical intimacy and onstage kissing.
(Female-identifying, Soprano/High Belt, on top of most triad harmony, C4-Bb5) The youngest member of the Dreams from the projects of Detroit. The heart of the group. Bubbly, high-energy, pragmatic, and flirtatious. Eager for success, she's swept off her feet by the married James Thunder Early. Speaks her mind. Must have an keen sense of humor, comedic skill, and move very well. Inspired by Supremes member Mary Wilson. Role requires physical intimacy and onstage kissing.
(Male-indentifying, Baritone, C3-G4) Former Cadillac dealer turned entertainment manager, turned music mogul. Charming, forceful, handsome, slick, and seductive but ruthless in the pursuit of his dreams. He is motivated by his hunger for mainstream success, an appreciation for crossover music, and keen business mind. Takes over the management of Jimmy Early's career and oversees the rise to stardom of The Dreams. Role requires physical intimacy and onstage kissing.
(Male-indentifying, High Bari-Tenor, Strong Falsetto up to Bb4) Effie's songwriting younger brother. Idealistic, loyal, endearing, and soft-spoken. His efforts to do the right thing are ultimately eclipsed by Curtis' controlling vision. Goes through the journey of losing and regaining himself. Falls in love with Michelle. Must move well. Inspired by Motown vice president, artist, producer, and songwriter Smokey Robinson. Role requires physical intimacy and an onstage kiss.
(Male-indentifying, Rock/Soul/R&B Tenor, Strong Falsetto to D5) Self-proclaimed King of Soul. A chart-topping and dynamic performer. A sexy, vibrant star full of flash, charisma, and chaos. Once a trendsetter, the newer trends threaten to pass him by. A deeply troubled showman of the era. Must move very well, comedic skill, and fearless stage presence. Inspired by R&B/soul singers such as James Brown, Jackie Wilson and Marvin Gaye. Role requires physical intimacy and onstage kissing.
(Male-indentifying, Baritone-up to G). Street savvy, long-time manager of Jimmy's career, and the one to clean up after his mistakes. Represents an earlier age of black entertainment; honest and loyal, never overstepping his bounds. At odds with Curtis and his ideas and schemes. Later oversees Effie's comeback.
(Female-identifying, Mezzo-Soprano, A3-F5) Replacement for Effie. A headstrong singer/performer that better fits into Curtis' aesthetic for The Dreams. Falls in love with C.C. and facilitates the reunion of him and his sister, Effie. Based upon three Supremes members Cindy Birdsong, Lynda Laurence, and Susaye Greene.
