Searching for performers to audition for the "The Color Purple" musical. Please see the details below. ONLY LOCAL TALENT WILL BE ACCEPTED. About the project: This musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel spotlights Celie, a downtrodden young woman whose personal awakening over the course of 35 years forms the arc of this epic story. With a joyous score featuring jazz, ragtime, gospel, African music and blues, The Color Purple is a story of hope, a testament to the healing power of love, and a celebration of life. Rate: This is a non-union production. Each performer will receive a stipend. Additional info: Callback Date: Saturday, May 4. Please prepare a 32-bar cut (30 seconds to 1 minute) of a song in the style of the show. You may bring either sheet music for a provided accompanist, or a track on an electronic device. If using a track, please make sure that your track is edited for your cut. No acapella singing. Please bring a copy of your headshot and resume. Please be prepared to provide any rehearsal conflicts you may have. Conflicts on performance dates are not permitted if cast. Intimacy: This production will have several intimate moments onstage. A certified intimacy director will stage these moments and ensure that all involved are comfortable. Performance Dates: August 2-4, 2024 (5 performances; Call time is one hour before each performance.) Friday, August 2: 8 pm; Saturday, August 3: 2 pm; Saturday, August 3: 8 pm; Sunday, August 4: 2 pm; Sunday, August 4: 6:30 pm; Performance Venue: MATCH- Matchbox 4. First Day of Rehearsal: The first day of rehearsal will be Monday, June 17, 2024. Rehearsal Schedule: Please note that you may not be called to all rehearsals. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays: 6:30 pm-10 pm; Saturdays: 10 am-4 pm (with a 1 hour lunch break); Tech Week: Tech will be held in the theatre July 29-August 1 from 6 pm-11 pm. Female Presenting: Drives the story. Vulnerable, spirited, introverted, mischievous, seemingly passive but really not, has a deep, hard soul, believes that she is ugly, has a sense of humor which is sometimes wicked. She is an observer. Needs a great belt singing voice with lots of soul.
Female-Presenting: A popular singer, we meet her at death’s door. Attractive, confident, dynamic, powerful, irresistible, but has a frailty, like a wounded animal. Her vulnerability is shocking later on. She is loved by both Celie and Mister. Needs a knockout, Bessie Smith-style, bluesy singing voice.
Male-Presenting: Like Celie, a deep well. Must be dominating, capable of brutal behavior but also a victim in his own way. Gets his power for free. Married to Celie, he abuses her. He is in love with Shug. He transforms into a kind man by the end of the story. Needs a great singing voice, high acting ability, and strong presence.
Female-Presenting: Powerful warrior woman. Comfortable being large, great sense of humor, touching, vulnerable. Married to Harpo, she does not let anyone mistreat her. Needs comic chops and a great belt singing voice.
Male-Presenting: Mister’s vulnerable, confused, good-hearted son. Represents the new generation. He marries the independent Sofia. He spends much time trying to get Sofia to obey him the way Celie obeys his father, but he is unsuccessful. Through his love of Sofia, he learns how to love a woman. Needs a great singing voice and comic chops.
Female-Presenting: Celie’s younger sister. Attractive, adventuresome, feisty spirit, maternal, educated, and knowledgeable than Celie. She has a powerful bond with Celie. Forced by Mister to leave Celie, she starts a new life in Africa. Needs a great belt singing voice and innocent approach.
Female-Presenting: Harpo’s lover after Sofia leaves him. Although she is mistreated, she eventually undergoes a transformation. Attractive, sassy, fiery, strong-willed, unafraid to take anybody on, has a caring heart. Needs comic chops. Needs a great singing voice with belt and soprano capability.
