Vietnamese female, (age flexible, to portray a woman in her 30’s). CHILD’s mother, who represents the typical young immigrant parent: she grew up with Vietnamese traditions, and struggles to raise a child in America. She is nurturing in a stern and authoritative manner, but will occasionally show a soft side. LEAD ROLE. Must be fluent in Vietnamese and English.
Vietnamese, (age semi-flexible, possible use of make-up to age up and portray older senior female). The matriarch and head of the household. She represents the first immigrants who will have lived most of their lives in Vietnam. The embodiment of Vietnamese culture, heritage, tradition, as well as of the past. She yearns to pass down her cultural legacy yet laments that change is inevitable. SUPPORTING ROLE: Vietnamese fluency required.
Vietnamese. Tien’s older brother who is a former gangster and ex-convict, though not fully reformed. His quick temper and violent streak has subsided, but his past and reputation still precedes him. He uses this perception of him to get what he wants, but will occasionally show tenderness in a “mentoring” way. He has a muscular build, tattoos, and a naturally sinister resting face. SUPPORTING ROLE. Able to speak some Vietnamese is preferred, but not necessary.
Vietnamese, (age flexible). Younger sister to MOM. She’s a single mother who doesn't revere Tet so much as a reason to celebrate and have fun. SUPPORTING ROLE. Vietnamese fluency.
Vietnamese, (age flexible, to portray a man in his 30’s). Husband to MOM and CHILD’s father. Prototypical Vietnamese immigrant father who innately reveres the festivities and tradition, and likes to drink and celebrate even more. He’s nurturing in the usual masculine way, which on the surface seems backwards and overly macho. Yet deep down, Dad yearns to teach Child to embrace Vietnamese ways. SUPPORTING ROLE. Vietnamese fluency.
Vietnamese, (age flexible). MOM’s and AUNT’s brother. Slightly oafish and lazy in his demeanor, but is very dependable when called upon. He’d rather relax with a cup of coffee and a cigarette instead of doing any kind of labor. SUPPORTING ROLE. Vietnamese fluency.
