10 roles
Henry’s second wife and Pippa’s stepmother. Clarissa has a vivid imagination which she shares with those around her, so those around her often have trouble knowing when she’s telling the truth and when she’s making things up. This becomes problematic when she discovers a corpse in her drawing room. Must be comfortable with kissing on stage.
Pippa’s father and Clarissa’s husband. He works in the Foreign Secretary’s office and is expecting to host a foreign dignitary at his home in the evening, which makes the ongoing murder investigation very inconvenient. Must be comfortable with kissing on stage.
Clarissa’s guardian during her childhood and her friend as an adult. He is retired from the Foreign Secretary’s office. Sir Rowland is willing to do anything to help Clarissa out of a jam.
When you look up curmudgeon in the dictionary you find Hugo’s picture. As a local Justice of the Peace, Hugo can’t afford to be caught up in a murder investigation. Hugo is a close friend of Sir Rowland’s, which is the only reason he agrees to help Sir Rowland help Clarissa out of a jam.
Jeremy works as a Private Secretary and gives his address as that of his employer, which makes him suspicious when the murder investigation starts. Described as elegant in the script, he has a crush on Clarissa despite her being married.
Miss Peake is Copplestone Court’s gardener and a very jolly woman. She came with the house, which the Hailsham-Browns have only lived in for a few months. She has the key for every door, which would certainly make it easy for her to come and go if she wanted to commit a murder.
The butler of Coppleston Court, but he’s only been working for the Hailsham-Browns for about 6 weeks. Miss Peake is convinced “the butler did it”, but Elgin protests his innocence.
Oliver is Pippa’s stepfather, having recently married her mother. Pippa hates him. Due to Oliver’s reputation as a drug dealer, none of the other characters seem fond of him either, as none of them seems the least bit sad when he turns up dead.
The police arrive at Copplestone Court after a phone tip that there has been a murder there. None of the people there admit to calling the police, and there is no body to be found when they arrive. The Inspector is very good at catching people in a web of lies, but will he be able to identify the murderer?
The Constable handles the grunt work for Inspector Lord. Jones speaks with a Welsh accent, much to the amusement of all the proper Brits. Possible doubling with Henry.
