As darkness falls outside the ramshackle pre-war duplex, the heart and horrors of the Blake clan are exposed. Blending comedy and drama, wit and heartbreak, this play was the winner of the 2016 Tony Award for Best Play. Erik is the family patriarch. He is less than thrilled his daughters left the safety of Scranton, PA for NYC. It’s revealed through the play that he recently lost his job as an Equipment Manager after 28 years at a private school. He has also been keeping another secret which could have devastating effects on the entire family.
Deirdre is Erik’s wife. She is Momo’s primary caretaker. She wants her daughters to continue the family’s traditional values, customs, and religious practice. Deirdre loves her family deeply, especially her daughters, but struggles to find balance between protecting them from hurt and letting them find their own way.
The elder of the Blake daughters works as an attorney. Nothing seems to be going her way lately. Work is challenging, her longtime girlfriend recently broke up with her, and she is dealing with ulcerative colitis and may need drastic surgery.
The younger of the two Blake daughters. She is a singer/musician who went to graduate school for music composition but is having difficulty getting her career (and adult life) started. She lives with her boyfriend, Richard, and together, they are hosting the family dinner.
Age 79 Momo has advanced dementia due to Alzheimer’s and is confined to a wheelchair. She has lost a lot of her language and mobility, but the family continues to involve Momo in family events. Is Momo aware of her family around her? Does she even remember who they are?
Brigid’s boyfriend and co-host of Thanksgiving dinner. He spends a lot of the time in the kitchen preparing the family meal. He desperately wants to be accepted “into the family” by the Blakes. He’s in grad school and a bit of a sci-fi nerd at heart, having grown up on sci-fi comic books. The age-gap between Richard and Brigid does not go unnoticed by the Blakes.
