7 roles
Lead. The film’s protagonist, Goku recognizes the world for what it really is, not a utopia but a dystopia. He claims to seek greatness and wish it for others, but hasn’t quite figured out what that means for himself until he’s forced to act in order to save the lives of Jason and Ashley. One of the most popular teens, he could cement his status as a trendsetter if he wanted to.
Lead. She is strong-willed and outspoken, but with not without some insecurities after working for years to establish herself as one of the “cool kids” and a trendsetter after an unusual childhood introduction to her peers. Verging on “mean girl” territory. She is Goku’s best friend since childhood, despite their political differences. She believes in the pursuit of utopia including whatever darker aspects are needed to achieve it.
Supporting. Sensitive, Beautiful, and Enigmatic. Ashley is frustrated with the dystopia and is looking for a way out. On the verge of giving up, she reports to the local “requesting clinic” to end her life. That’s where we meet her with our protagonist, Goku. After Goku takes a stand against the dystopia, she decides to join him rather than end her life.
Not easy on the eyes. Jason struggles to find meaning and friendship within the dystopia. Plagued since birth with health-problems, is tempted by the dystopia’s offer of an easy way out and fills out a request to end his life. This is a complex and difficult role. It’s ambiguous how much of Jason’s actions are a legitimate call for help, and how much is a call for attention from Zelda (whom he has an obsession with). Expert freestyle dance skills a plus. Supporting Lead.
Supporting. Ripply is one of the most popular guys and an expert smashball player at the digital arcade. It’s unclear if he’s a bro or a rival of Goku, sometimes a friend and sometimes a bully to Zelda. He will at least stick up for them against the local gang of cyper-punks plaguing their sector of the dark city. Tall, athletic, Alpha-Male type. Supporting.
Supporting. Bold and Resolute, The Reverend Jeanie is a pastor at the local Springs of Life Church of Aquarius, a futuristic Christian / New Age Sect. Firmly believing in the sanctity of all life no matter how mentally, physically, or spiritually broken. She will stop at nothing to save the hopeless souls dead-set on the path to destruction, though her methods tend to be ineffective, and almost as distant from the needs of the broken as the dystopian system itself. - Day Player / One-Day-Shoot
Day Player. ‘The Receptionist’ has the unfortunate and mostly boring job of admitting new patients into the “requesting” clinic on their way to their chosen death. With the demeanor of something like an annoying librarian she is tasked with the administrative duties of ensuring everything goes smoothly and quietly without interruption or incident in this dark and bizarre corner of the Dystopia. - Day Player / One-Day-Shoot
