The company is holding auditions for comedy "Nice Work If You Can Get" and looking for performers, please see the details below. About the project: A hilarious new screwball comedy, Nice Work If You Can Get It pokes fun at the Prohibition era in a clash of elegant socialites and boorish bootleggers, all set to the glorious songs of George and Ira Gershwin. Additional info: Callbacks (if needed) - Wednesday, December 6 - 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm NOTE: Auditions are open call. There are no scheduled appointments. Prepare 16-32 measures of a BROADWAY song and bring your sheet music, unless it's a song from the show. A pianist will be present with the show score, so a capella singing and taped music will NOT be allowed, and songs from a juke box musical will be frowned upon. You will be dancing at the audition, so dress comfortably/appropriately. All auditioners will sing and then dance, followed by cold readings. Not everyone will read, but not being asked to read does NOT mean you won't be cast - it only means we've seen what we need from you. ONLY auditioners contacted for a callback will be seen. Performance dates are April 26, 27, May 3. 4. 5, 10 & 11, 2024. If you cannot commit to ALL of these dates, please DO NOT audition.
12 roles
Portrayed by Matthew Broderick on Broadway, Jimmie is a happy-go-lucky multi-millionaire playboy dripping with charm and charisma who has never worked a day in his life and is totally fine with that. He has been married 3 (or maybe it’s 4) times so far, is a little naïve but quick to catch on, and loves life while not taking it too seriously – that is, until he meets Billie Bendix. High Baritone/Tenor and must sing and move very well.
A wise cracking bootlegger and partner of Billie, Cookie has been a crook most of his life but is still sweet guy at heart. He becomes Jimmie’s butler and is devoted to making sure his boss is happy. He eventually falls in love with Estonia, which provides plenty of laughs. Looking for someone shorter than Jimmy. High Baritone/Tenor, excellent comedic timing, and a good singer and dances well.
Duke is the quintessential tough but dumb muscle of a criminal gang. You sense he can be violent when necessary, but he’s actually very sensitive at heart – he even cries throughout one entire scene. He falls in love with Jeannie, who is led to believe he’s the King of England. Must be taller than both Jimmie and Cookie. Bass/Baritone, good comedic skills, and a good singer and dances well.
Senator Evergreen, actually. He’s the father of Eileen, who is supposed to become Jimmie’s 3rd (or 4th) wife. A right-wing Prohibitionist Republican, Max is all law and order until the truth about him comes out in the finale. Baritone. Singing talent will be a plus for this role.
Stereotypical comedic police chief who always seems to leave one escape route open for the crooks. He eventually falls in love with Eileen in a great scene. Needs to have great comic timing and a nice voice (Bari/Tenor). Moving well is a definite plus
Male ensemble will portray Speakeasy guests, several small roles, and primarily the singing and dancing Vice Squad. Think Elliot Ness and G-Men, but not quite as smart. Looking for 6 actors who sing and move well. All ensemble members will have character names in the program
Portrayed on Broadway by Kelli O’Hara, Billie is a tough talking, street wise bootlegger who is cynical about just about everything. She’s built walls around herself for protection, but Jimmie steadily breaks every one of them down as they fall in love. Needs to be able to do an Irish accent in several scenes. Soprano. Must have excellent voice, comedic timing and dance skills.
A great role for the “self-proclaimed finest interpreter of modern dance in the world.” Rich, privileged, Senator’s daughter, she’s supposed to marry Jimmie but finds every excuse not to sleep with him (fortunately). Mezzo Soprano. Must sing and move well.
Her stated title tells you what you need to know: “Proud Founder of the Society of Dry Women.” Fierce Prohibitionist and sister of the Senator, Estonia is a great comedic character who is actually very lonely and falls in love (after getting drunk) with Cookie. Soprano. Great character skills plus strong singing and comedic timing needed.
Tough but sweet lead chorus girl from Brooklyn who has always wanted to be royalty. She hears Duke’s name and believes he’s a real Duke, and then the King of England. They eventually fall in love. Jeannie needs to be an excellent dancer, sing very well (Alto), and have great comic timing.
A smaller but very important role as she reveals she’s not only Jimmie’s mother, but also the head bootlegger and the former lover of the Senator, making Jimmie his son!!! Tough broad with a heart of gold. No singing or dancing.
Plays Speakeasy guests, several small roles, but primarily singing and dancing Chorus Girls that Jimmy keeps marrying. Think high pitched voices, big smiles and flapper dresses. Looking for 6 actresses who sing well and dance very well. All ensemble members will have character names in the program.
