Main Character. James is the protagonist. He is a popular and successful student who appears to have everything going his way, but a troubled home life and worries about college belie his happy life. He is partially responsible for the wreck that kills six of his friends. He is convicted of vehicular manslaughter and sent to prison for his role in the accident. (Appears in all 10 episodes).
Main Character. James’s father. Michael’s relationship with James is rocky, primarily because Michael is a self-employed record/concert producer who is working 24/7 and has little time for James. (Appears in episodes 1,2,3,4,5,8,9,10).
Main Character. James’ mother. Evelyn is a loving and caring mother, and while she has gone off on an international mission for their church, she remains committed to helping her son when he needs her. She returns early from her overseas mission as soon as she learns of the wreck. She is instrumental in helping James deal with his time in prison. She helps him get connected to the Prison Ministry. Main Character. Ryan is Ben’s father. Ryan is a fireman. He is brave and fearless. He is very close to Ben and struggles more than any of the other parents when Ben dies. He gives three sermons that are powerful statements that provide structure for the miniseries, establish the theme, and illustrate the power and meaning of forgiveness. Main Character. Blue Man is the head of an inside prison gang which does not exist outside the prison. Members belong to this gang out of self-defense, but they don’t want to be associated with a gang when they get out of prison. Blue Man is a tough leader, but he stops short of being a really dark figure, as he would if he was the leader, as he would if he was the leader of a street gang. (Appears in episode 6,7,8,9,10).
Main Character. Christopher is a prison guard. He plays a pivotal character in the miniseries. We see him in a few early scenes, when he investigates a death in the prison shower, but the audience doesn’t learn much about him until episode 8, when he enters James Cell where he reveals part of his life story which plays out tragically in episode 9, when he is killed in a prison riot.
