12 roles
(Female presenting ) Sweet, unmarried, a pleasant, but sarcastic young woman staying at her cousin’s house with her equally caustic brother, somewhat spoiled but concerned about getting her share, opinionated and outspoken.
(Female presenting ) an older woman, calm, collected, and a soothing influence to all, concerned with position and prestige and afraid of losing both. . Sophisticated, monied, “beyond middle age,” never married. Owner of Chipping Cleghorn, scene of the play.
(Female presenting ) Letitia’s oldest friend, somewhat dotty and confused, but with a wicked streak, prone to being unduly flustered and confused. Forgetful, flighty, dependent on Letitia.
(Male Presenting ) Julia’s older brother; witty, sarcastic — a man of thoughts, not action…idle rich, professional student prone to deception and pranks. Would rather create schemes and plots than work towards his own advancement. Handsome and self assured, good looking, and smooth.
Female presenting. The eccentric, excitable, emotional, melodramatic, and paranoid middle-European cook/maid with a Hungarian or Slavic accent. Deeply impressed with her own importance and apparent victimhood.
(Female presenting) Letitia’s neighbor and amateur sleuth; Quick witted, quiet but very perceptive, unassuming but with an iron will…will not be deterred from the truth.
(Female presenting) Letitia’s mysterious boarder; secretive, and somewhat aggressive, a kind and loyal widow concerned for her son’s future. Elegant, touch of class, serious minded.
(Female presenting ) another neighbor; snobby and nosey, social climber constantly seeking means to improve her prestige. Edmund’s mother. One of the grand dames of the area; sophisticated, haughty.
(Male Presenting ) Mrs. Swettenham’s privileged son; condescending upper-class type, part time writer…burgeoning Communist, waste of oxygen dreams may yet inspire him to get out to embrace and tackle life.
(Male Presenting ) the mysterious stranger; heavy, unrecognizable accent. A reprehensible villain whose odious nature is obviated only by the brevity of his existence. Dialect to be determined during rehearsal.
(Male Presenting ) the police inspector, dedicated if unimaginative…clever enough to know his own limits and willing to consider all inputs for clues. Definitely in charge. There is good chemistry between Craddock and Miss Marple.
(Male Presenting) Craddock’s cohort, Yoeman like veteran…he’s seen it all and doesn’t care much for those who won’t “shoulder the wheel”. Good at his job. Works well with Craddock.
