About the project: STORYLINE: Hanne on the High Sea is a coming-of-age later in life story about Hannelore Schmitt, a German widow in her late 60’s, who feels like life is leaving her behind. With a nudge from a friend, Hannelore takes a job as an usher at a performing arts theatre, where she unexpectedly begins an affair, and falls in love with the story of Annie Edson Taylor, the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a Barrel and survive. When Hannelore learns that Annie was close to her age when she went over the falls, she is inspired to take charge of her own future, and tries to talk her friends into joining her on an adventure of a lifetime. The story is based on ‘The Widows’ by the Giller Prize winning novelist Suzette Mayr. Rate: Union: artists will be engaged on an actra/ubcp ultra low budget contract. both union and non-union artists are invited to submit. Hannelore is the protagonist of our story. She is uptight and determined, used to being needed and in control. She is critical of those around her, but lightens up when she finally finds some pleasure (with Hamish the lighting man), and a calling of her own. In her own way, Hannelore is deeply loyal to her friends and family, particularly her granddaughter, Cleopatra Maria. There is kissing and physical intimacy in this role.
In particularly interested in receiving submissions from BIPOC actors who identify as LGBTQ+ for this role. Frau Schnadelhuber is a hard worker and a little reckless (she likes to steal things). She has worked at a German deli for over 20 years, where she meets Hannelore, and helps her find a job. Frau Schnadelhuber and Hannelore’s sister, Clotilde, are in the early stages of a passionate, deeply romantic relationship. There is kissing and physical intimacy in this role.

Clotilde is bookish, straight forward, sex positive, and feminist. She is a retired academic, who spends her time reading literature, and substitute lecturing. Clotilde seduces Frau Schnadelhuber, and forms a deep attachment to her. There is kissing and physical intimacy in this role.
Cleopatra Maria is Hannelore’s granddaughter. She is living with Hannelore and Clotilde while she goes to University, where she is studying pre-med. Cleopatra Maria seems young for her age emotionally, and is going through an existential crisis as she tries to figure out a path of her own. Cleopatra Maria’s maternal family are Caribbean Canadian. Particularly interested in receiving submissions from Black actors for this role. There is kissing and physical intimacy in this role.
Hamish is the lighting man at the theatre where Hannelore works. He is confident, mechanically inclined, and a little gruff. He flirts with all the ladies at the theatre. Hamish has built a space-aged Niagara Ball that he plans on sending over Niagara Falls. Hannelore and Hamish have an affair. There is kissing and physical intimacy in this role.
Dot works as an usher at the theatre where Hannelore works, and is her friend. She is quick-witted, and knows all the work gossip. She lets Hannelore know that Hamish, the lighting man, has his eyes on her.
The Wardrobe Mistress is brave, energetic, and worldly. She has seen every performance of Niagara! The Musical. When the lead can’t perform one evening, The Wardrobe Mistress takes her part. She gives a stunning, somber performance, and becomes an inspiration to Hannelore. There is singing in this role.
Star of Niagara! The Musical! A minor diva with a pension for drinking one too many on a night out. She has a beautiful voice to match her graceful disposition on stage. There is singing in this role.
The Young Usher is a rule follower. They have their ears to the ground, and know just what management wants and needs. When Dot unexpectedly dies, Hannelore has to work closely with the young usher, who becomes a foil to her plans for adventure.
Cleopatra Maria’s nerdy, yet politically astute boyfriend. He is kind, serious and thoughtful. There is kissing and physical intimacy in this role.
An entitled patron of the theatre and fan of Sharon Lee Silver, this character is appalled when the lead actress is replaced by the much older wardrobe mistress for a night.
