About the project: The Exorcist play is based on the 1971 novel of the same name by William Peter Blatty. The story revolves around a young girl, Regan MacNeil, who is possessed by a demonic spirit. Her mother, Chris, seeks out to the church to perform an exorcism. William Peter Blatty's, THE EXORCIST, remains one of the most terrifying, shocking, and controversial novels ever written! Inspired by the true story of demonic possession, this battle between good and evil, between faith and doubt, comes to life in this chilling new stage play by acclaimed playwright, John Pielmeier! Additional info: Auditions consist of cold readings from the script. This play is currently unpublished and perusal scripts are not available. It is therefore recommended that actors familiarize themselves with the story, the characters, and the original novel by William Peter Blatty prior to the audition. A sinister demon who possesses Regan after posing as her imaginary friend Captain Howdy. He has a history with Father Merrin. Pazuzu is a violent, foul-mouthed creature, able to control Regan's body at will and has a variety of supernatural, terrorizing powers. Regan and the Demon often speak the same lines in unison. Must be comfortable with adult language.
Chris' twelve-year old daughter. Introduced as a sweet, innocent girl, Regan starts exhibiting abnormal behaviour after making contact with "Captain Howdy" via an Ouija board. The actor playing Regan must appear to be 12 years old but will be played by an actor who is 18 years old or older. This is an emotionally and physically demanding role. They will not make any exceptions. Regan and the Demon sometimes speak in unison. Physicality is a must! Contortion skills a plus!
A successful actress and a single mother. Devoted to her daughter despite her busy schedule and goes to the ends of the earth to free Regan from Pazuzu's control. Emotionally demanding role.
Comes across as a kind, laidback, down to Earth priest.
A troubled priest and psychiatrist, Father Karras lives in poverty. He is asked by Chris to investigate Regan's behaviour, prompting him to prepare for an exorcism and regain his faith in God and himself.
