"The Boys Next Door” Hilarious Play Needs Actors
Theatre is pleased to announce auditions for its upcoming production of "The Boys Next Door.” Looking for cast. ONLY LOCAL TALENT WILL BE CONSIDERED. Please see the breakdown below. About the project: This touching and hilarious play follows the lives of four mentally handicapped men who live in a communal residence. As they go about their daily lives, they are watched over by their social worker, Jack, who is struggling with his own personal and professional challenges. Rate: Actors will receive a small stipend per performance. Additional info: Please bring a headshot/recent picture and resume, if you have them available. Prepare a 1-2 minute monologue. Callbacks TBD. Rehearsal dates: Weekend and evening rehearsals; willing to work around cast conflicts if necessary. A mildly mentally disabled person who works at a movie theater, hyperactive and talks constantly, often abused by coworkers and is afraid to fight back, tends to be OCD.
An overweight, middle-aged mentally disabled person who works at a doughnut shop, romantically involved with Sheila, a person from another group home, very proud and possessive of a large ring of keys.
A large person who is very mentally disabled and functions at about a second-grade level, checks out books from the library, despite the fact they cannot read. Note: This role is traditionally played by an African-American actor; not required but preferred.
The social worker for the four main characters, becoming burned out and is thinking about a new line of work.
Mrs. Fremus, a widow who lives next door; Mrs. Warren, a new neighbor; Clara, Sheila's mentally disabled friend. Note: The three parts above are played by one person.
Mr. Hodges, Barry's golf student whose patience only goes so far; Mr. Corbin, the movie theater manager; Senator Clark, a dignified public servant. Note: The three parts above are played by one actor.
A mentally challenged person who is in love with Norman, desperately wants the large ring of keys.
Barry's explosive, abusive, physically handicapped father.
A young schizophrenic who believes they are a golf pro, gets highly agitated over small things, has had a traumatic life growing up due to their abusive father and has been in and out of institutions.
