Janet is a sweet, loving mother whose love for her son is undying. She will go to any lengths to help him overcome his alcoholism. Janet, aside from being compassionate and gentle, she is also very controlling and manipulative.
Charlie is deeply flawed. He is deluded in his own fantasies thinking that he is fully taking care of his mother, but the reality is that Charlie is an alcoholic. He struggles to cope with the pressures of his own failures in life and the pressures of his mother. He is defensive and quick to lash out both physically, and verbally when confronted.
