About the project: SYNOPSIS: "Boxcutter" follows aspiring rapper Rome (super talented but stunted by a fear of failure) and visual artist Jenaya (super confident but fearless to a fault) as they navigate through a gentrified Toronto trying to follow their dreams of making it as artists. The movie is a quest, taking place over the course of one hot and humid Toronto summer day. While at work, Rome gets news that a Grammy-Award-winning producer will be making an appearance on Queen West. Blind ambition takes over and he leaves work early to go finish his songs in time for the event - only to arrive home to a burgled apartment. And thus the quest begins. A quest to get his songs back. A race to get to the event in time. And a journey to learn that conquering your biggest fears starts with the smallest of steps. Rate: Union and non-union. Paid. Lead. Earnest, charming, and tired of working in a warehouse, Rome is an ASPIRING RAPPER seeking to make a name for himself. There's only one problem though - the PERFECTIONIST in him is TOO INSECURE to actually release any music. With DELUSIONAL FEARS of his songs being leaked, he's also TOO STUBBORN to backup his files on the internet.
Jenaya is an ACTIVIST-ARTIST HELL-BENT on speaking truth to POWER. Jenaya and Rome go way back, and she loves to poke fun at him whenever she can. Accompanying Rome on his quest, she depicts the dangers of gentrification in her art using the whole city as her canvas. But her ideas conflict with Rome's. He finds the endeavour to be a waste of time and she feels that if his music is good enough he should just release it online for people to hear.
Supporting. Rome's friend / manager who's invested time and money into the project. He's a hustler who is always scheming. After their equipment is stolen, Sid is tasked with finding who robbed them. Meanwhile he's trying to get Rome performing at small local shows so they can make some money and build buzz. Sid doesn't have a 'plan b' and is desperate for Rome to listen. If he doesn't, Sid is ready to do whatever it takes to get a return on his investment.
