About the project: Play Synopsis: KUDZU 2012 is a screwball tragedy that highlights how tech-driven gentrification devastates working-class Black families. All the hipster obsessions and excesses get dragged and dragged hard—kombucha and ka le, tiny housing, horrible food substitutes, cosplaying, obnoxious wearable technology, etc. But behind the laughs is a hard look at the dynamics and values displacing Black people from their homes. Rate: $200 Additional info: Proof of Vaccination required. Rehearsal dates: Date/Time (zoom) 3 hours Tues Nov 1, 4:30-7:30pm Date/Time (zoom / In-person) 3 hours Thurs Nov 10, 4-7 pm (West Oakland) participants will need to test self in advance. (“June” “Mr. Boo Jangles”) / Pretty Boy Twin: (LEAD) (must be able to play a youth 16-20): Teen son, mischievous, girl-crazy turf dancer, barista hopeful who’s beginning to notice that society is putting him at a distance / Earnest security guard at EcoGrocer who’s smitten with Tamika (Angela’s daughter).
(SUPPORT) Trans Woman: New produce manager of EcoGrocer, transitioning transgender woman who isn’t as progressive as she appears.
(“Jolly Cholly Olly”): (SUPPORT) Melbert Sr’s old buddy, neighborhood dude who inherited a large home years ago, has never seemed to have a real job, vinyl record dealer, cagey, selfish, and stubborn in that way doggedly stupid people have.
