In the United States, the most renowned acting techniques are those invented by gurus whose strong personalities not only gained them professional distinction but also caught the eye of an interested public.

Here are some acting methods to use when auditioning;

Stanislavski Acting Technique

This is you creating an emotionally expressive and original performance through preparation and rehearsal.

Actors internalize the inner lives of their characters, including their motives and emotional states. The goal is to add reality to your acting by breaking down the part based on the character's situation.

This is a one-of-a-kind acting approach. Actors often use the “what if” in a way that they imagine themselves in their character’s shoes.

Method Acting Technique by Lee Strasberg

This method was inspired by the Stanislavski technique. Just like Stanislavski, it requires the actor to show as many honest emotions as possible. The actors are usually taught to use their physical, mental, and emotional skills to help recollect strong emotions in their personal experiences.

Meisner Acting Technique

Lee Strasberg had affiliations with the Sandford Meinser and was also influenced by the Stanislavski Acting Technique. For this technique, it might be a bit tricky because you will rid yourself of your inclination and work with instinct instead. You have to concentrate on the other actors in the immediate environment. Training your skill of improvisation- the use of imagination to create emotions instead of memory.

Chekhov Technique

Also trained by Stanislavski, this technique is an imaginative approach where the actor creates an inner experience in real-time, and the actor plays it out. You will be working on impulse, imagination, and inner and outer gestures. The idea is to present a more exaggerated depiction of reality.

Boal Technique

Also known as the Theater of the oppressed, this technique is to help participants realize and resist their oppressors. Boal's techniques use theater as a way to promote social and political change. It was coined from the fact that dialogue is the common, healthy dynamic between all humans, that all human beings desire and are capable of dialogue, and that when a dialogue becomes a monologue, oppression comes in.

Vsevolod Meyerhold

Meyerhold's approach was to develop techniques that forced the audience to look at the world primarily through a visual lens, with verbal functioning as an additional tool. It is a new method of producing theater, and actors were trained within a system that allowed them to be constantly aware of themselves in the performance space while developing their bodies to perform any action in a natural expressive state.

Stella Adler Acting Technique

This technique helps to explore your imagination because using just your personal, emotional emotions can be limiting. Actors are allowed to use textures, aesthetics, and sounds of everyday life to help create a solid, detailed, and realistic image on stage. In addition to your imagination, it also relies on discipline, text analysis, and action.

Uta Hagen

Uta Hagen developed an acting approach that is based on the Stanislavsky System, which pushed performers to act genuinely in imaginary situations. It allows the desire to rehearse and develop acting craft in a physical and behavioral manner without needing to be in a school or rehearsal. The technique is self-sufficient, which means you can practice on your own, at home, in your workplace, in the park, at the beach, or wherever.

Practical Aesthetics Acting Technique by David Mamet

This is a combination of Stanislavski, Meisner, and the philosopher Epictetus. This approach focuses on making the performance experience entirely dependent on the actor's choice. The Practical Aesthetic simply requires an actor to engage his will to take action depending on the other actor.

In doing so, the actor will get into the character's environment, giving a more genuine performance.

Pillow Acting Technique

If you are interested in acting in sex scenes but don't want to have real sex, then this technique is for you. The pillow acts as a buffer between the two actors to create the illusion of having sex without too much physical intimacy.

Alexander Acting Technique

This technique is to help performers physically and mentally prepare for their roles using a number of relaxation methods and other physical and breathing exercises. It is done by artists to relax their bodies, minimize stress, and create a greater physical connection with their audience.

The method isn't just important for performers and singers; it also gives a variety of everyday advantages, like lowering tension and stress, boosting communication skills, and improving posture and movement.

What Are the Acting Techniques for Beginners?

  • Knowing what your character wants; When you know what your character wants, you can be able to mimic it. What your character wants will dictate the way you say lines, the way you hit your marks, and the way you act each scene. A technique to help with this is called "Verbing" — it means exploring the script/lines through action words. You can act on those specific emotions and actions and then bring them forward in the performance.
  • Read the Whole Script; Even if you're only playing a minor part, read the entire script they send you. A technique you can do once you finish reading the whole script is to create a character’s sketch — write down things to describe your character and their personality. Once you understand them totally, you can become them.
  • Watch Other Performances; mimic what you see. Perfect your version of experienced actors performing. Try to add layers based on what you see in reality.  This can help you understand why actors make certain choices.
