Casting Calls in Illinois: Chicago Auditions and Pay in 2026

  • Chicago is the third-largest media market in the United States and carries essentially all of Illinois's casting work.

Casting calls in Illinois: Chicago is the third-largest media market in the United States and carries essentially all of Illinois's casting work. Illinois casting is Chicago casting. The city is the third-largest media market in the United States and carries effectively all of the state's film, television, commercial and theatre work — which makes this one of the simplest markets on this list to understand and one of the more interesting ones to work in.

What distinguishes Chicago is that it has a genuine performing culture of its own rather than functioning purely as a location for productions based elsewhere. The theatre scene here is deep and long-established, and casting directors treat stage credits as real evidence rather than as a warm-up to screen work. For a performer without screen credits, that is a usable route in that most markets do not offer.

This guide covers what casting calls in Illinois pay in 2026, the state's unusual trust-account rule for minors, how the theatre route works, and how to spot a fake casting call.

Where the casting work is in Illinois

Chicago

The whole market, practically speaking. Chicago runs network television production, a large commercial and corporate industry, one of the country's most significant theatre scenes, and a steady stream of independent film. Productions also use the city as a location constantly, because it reads as a major American city without the cost of New York.

What do casting calls in Illinois pay?

Union scale, effective 1 July 2026

  1. Background actor — $231 per 8 hours. Special ability $241; stand-ins and photo doubles $270.
  2. Day performer — $1,283 per day.
  3. Three-day performer (television) — $3,252.
  4. Weekly performer — $4,456 per week.

Union days also carry time-and-a-half for hours nine and ten, double time beyond, meal penalties, and adjustments for wardrobe, extensive hair and makeup, working in cold or wet conditions and bringing your own vehicle. Chicago winters make that cold-weather adjustment less theoretical than it sounds. Our guide to extras pay lists every one.

Non-union work

Non-union rates vary by production, with Chicago's city minimum wage of $17.05 an hour as the effective floor — considerably higher than the federal $7.25 that applies in Georgia or Tennessee. Payment typically arrives two to four weeks after the shoot day, from a payroll company rather than the production.

Illinois is not a right-to-work state. That is a real difference from Georgia, Texas, Tennessee, Louisiana and North Carolina. The union line carries more weight here, which makes working toward SAG-AFTRA eligibility more valuable in Chicago than in most of the country. Three days of background work under a SAG-AFTRA agreement qualifies you, evidenced by pay stubs rather than vouchers.

Co-stars and small speaking roles

Illinois rules that affect whether you can work

The trust-account rule, with one unusual exemption

Illinois is one of only five states — with California, New York, Louisiana and New Mexico — that require a minor's earnings to be held in a blocked trust account. But Illinois is the only one of the five with a notable carve-out: it exempts background performers.

  • If your child books a speaking role, the trust requirement applies and the account should be open before the booking, not after.
  • If your child is working as background, the Illinois exemption means the state will not require the account — so set one up yourself if you want the protection.
  • Submissions for anyone under 18 are made by a parent or legal guardian, never by the child.

How to spot a fake Chicago casting call

Registering with a legitimate background casting company is always free, and you never pay to audition. Casting companies are paid by productions, not by performers.

The Federal Trade Commission published a consumer alert on virtual casting call scams in December 2025, describing unexpected texts from supposed talent scouts offering fast-turnaround auditions for real, recognisable titles that become sales pitches for photo shoots or classes.

  • Any fee — registration, "processing", mandatory headshot packages, or classes bundled with a promised audition.
  • Unexpected texts or DMs naming a real Chicago production. Legitimate casting does not cold-text strangers.
  • Impersonation of real casting directors through lookalike domains and new social accounts.
  • Requests for bank details or a Social Security number before a signed booking with a named production and payroll company.
  • Guaranteed bookings or guaranteed representation. Neither can be promised.

Report suspected scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, forward scam texts to 7726, and contact SAG-AFTRA if the union's name is invoked.

How To

Treat Chicago Theatre Credits as Real Currency

Chicago is one of the few American cities where stage work is taken seriously as a casting credential rather than treated as something you did before you got serious about screen work. The city has a deep, long-established theatre culture, and casting directors here read a résumé of real stage credits as evidence that you can take direction, hold a scene and show up prepared. If you have theatre experience, lead with it. If you do not and you live here, it is the most accessible way in the country to build credits that local casting will actually respect — storefront and fringe companies cast continuously and most of them are open to people without screen credits.

  1. 1
    Build Credits Through Chicago Theatre
This is the Chicago-specific advantage and most people arriving here do not use it. The city sustains everything from major companies to storefront and fringe theatres, and the smaller ones cast continuously and are genuinely open to performers with no screen credits. A short résumé of real stage work carries weight with Chicago casting directors in a way it does not in most markets, because they know what it takes to carry a show eight times a week.
Pro Tip: Audition for storefront and fringe productions before you worry about an agent. Credits first, representation second — that order works in Chicago specifically.
  2. 2
Register for Background and Take the Volume Work
Chicago’s network television production needs background continuously — commuters, hospital staff, first responders, office workers, restaurant patrons. Register with the background casting companies working the city, keep a complete profile with current photos and accurate measurements, and apply steadily. There is no audition and no experience requirement; you are cast on how you look and whether you are free.
Pro Tip: Keep genuine winter gear ready. Chicago shoots exteriors through the cold months, and union productions owe an adjustment for working in those conditions — one most performers never claim.
  3. 3
Work Toward Union Eligibility, Because This Is Not a Right-to-Work State
Illinois is not right-to-work, unlike Georgia, Texas, Tennessee or the Carolinas, so the union line carries real weight in Chicago. Three days of background work under a SAG-AFTRA agreement makes you eligible, evidenced by pay stubs rather than by the vouchers themselves — moving you to $231 per 8 hours plus overtime, meal penalties and adjustments.
Pro Tip: Ask whether a production is a signatory before you work it, and keep every pay stub. Also weigh the trade-off: once you join, Global Rule One prevents you working non-union productions anywhere.

Q&A

Are there casting calls in Illinois?
Yes, and essentially all of them are in Chicago — the third-largest media market in the United States. The city carries network television production, a large commercial and corporate industry, one of the country's most significant theatre scenes, and a steady stream of independent film.
How much do casting calls in Illinois pay?
Union productions pay SAG-AFTRA scale: from 1 July 2026 that is $231 per 8 hours for background, $241 for special ability, $270 for stand-ins, $1,283 a day for a speaking role and $4,456 a week. Non-union rates vary, with Chicago's city minimum wage of $17.05 an hour as the effective floor — well above the federal $7.25 that applies in several southern states.
Is Illinois a right-to-work state?
No. Unlike Georgia, Texas, Tennessee, Louisiana and the Carolinas, Illinois is not right-to-work, which means the union line carries more weight here. Working toward SAG-AFTRA eligibility is more valuable in Chicago than in most of the country.
Does Illinois require a trust account for child actors?
Yes, with one unusual exception. Illinois is one of five states requiring a minor's earnings to be held in a blocked trust — but it is the only one of the five that exempts background performers. So the requirement applies to speaking roles but not to background work. If your child is doing background, set up an account yourself if you want that protection.
How do I get started acting in Chicago with no credits?
Through theatre. Chicago's storefront and fringe companies cast continuously and most are open to performers without screen credits, and Chicago casting directors genuinely respect stage work. It is the most accessible credit-building route of any major American market. Background work runs in parallel and needs no credits at all.
How do I become an extra in Chicago?
Register with the background casting companies working the city, keep a complete profile with current photos and accurate measurements, and apply to notices as they post. Chicago's network television production needs background continuously, and there is no audition or experience requirement.
Do I need an agent to get cast in Chicago?
Not to start. Background, commercial and small speaking roles are reachable through casting platforms and direct registration. In Chicago specifically, the usual order is credits first and representation second — build a stage résumé and an agent conversation becomes much easier.
How do I avoid casting scams in Chicago?
Registering with a legitimate background casting company is always free, and you never pay to audition. Treat as red flags any fee, mandatory headshot packages, classes bundled with a promised audition, unexpected texts naming a real production, impersonation of casting directors through lookalike domains, and requests for bank details before a signed booking.
