Welcome AMERICA to the new music competition series AMERICAS EXTREME TALENT. A.E.T. begins with 30 extreme Talents.  A.E.T. is set out on a journey across the nation to discover a new crop of inspiring talent for the new Season in NEW YORK. Once the panel judges select the 30 hopefuls. America will have the chance to decide who is brought on to the show by voting TALENT that sings their own songs, their own lyrics, and their own style throughout the show. You can AUDITION ONLINE.

About the project: 
While Stephen Schwartz’s PIPPIN originally opened on Broadway in October 1972 and is considered to be a ‘70 s musical, it was actually originally written for the Scotch ‘n’ Soda Club by Schwartz while at Carnegie Mellon University in 1967. 1967 was the Summer of Love, Flower Power was at its peak and the War was raging in Vietnam. Theater's production will follow the 2013 Broadway revival libretto but will be intentionally stripped back and re-imagined in its concept, allowing the audience to really find the heart of the piece and will be set in a storytelling circle reflecting back the spirit of the ‘60 s/’70 s in a fun, fresh and theatrical way.

-Prepare 2 one-minute selections of both an up-tempo AND ballad musical theatre  song; selections from PIPPIN acceptable and encouraged but not mandatory. 
-Please bring sheet music in the correct key. An accompanist is provided.
- Prerecorded accompaniment acceptable ready-cued on phone, sync with our speaker.
- Also prepare for and dress appropriately for a dance audition, so plan your day accordingly.

COVID disclaimer: based on CDC recommendations, company guidelines as well as Broadway League practices, Theatre recommends all involved with Pippin auditions, callbacks, rehearsals and performances to be fully vaccinated and boostered. Masks recommended in all common waiting areas based on your comfort but not required.

The director and lead performer of a traveling theater troupe and the musical's narrator. The Leading Player is the commentator, critic, and enabler all at once, but the big question is what is his/her true interest in Pippin? Masterfully charming and manipulative, the Leading Player is a chameleon.
A charismatic performer of power. Must be able to guide us to dark side without revealing his/her intention.

Leading Player

The eldest son of Charlemagne and the musical's protagonist. Despite the privilege he enjoys as heir to the throne, Pippin is unfulfilled by what life at court has to offer. He is longing to find his purpose and the meaning of his life. Naive, innocent, and discontented.
Actor must be a lead who can carry the story and gain the audience's trust and interest in following him on his journey. Must be comfortable on stage stripped down to undergarments.
Dance: Required. Vocal Range: G2 – Ab4

Pippin

The emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Pippin and Lewis’s demanding father, and Fastrada’s husband. He is an adherent that, to maintain and run society, war is a part of everyday life and a skill that one should master.
A character actor of power who can play older. 
Dance: Required. Vocal Range: G2 – E4

Charlemagne (Charles)

The youngest son of Emperor Charlemagne and Pippin’s half-brother. A strong, brash and dim-witted soldier, Lewis loves his mother almost as much as he loves himself. He is next in line (after Pippin) to inherit the throne. Addicted to the physical, Lewis loves weight lifting, Lewis loves wrestling, but most of all, Lewis loves Lewis. 
Requires good physicality. A young character actor who plays the antagonist.

Lewis

Pippin’s saucy grandmother and Charlemagne’s mother. Berthe was exiled to the countryside after disagreeing with her daughter-in-law, Fastrada. A brassy woman full of wisdom, grace, sass and presence, Berthe advises Pippin to live his life to the fullest by seeking fulfillment through sensuality. Demands a character actress of musical theater presence. Has the musical theater “It” factor. 
Dance: Required. Vocal Range: E3 – C5

Berthe

A widow who has been left with a large estate, which she can hardly manage on her own. She meets Pippin at a low point in his journey and welcomes him into her home. They ultimately fall in love. Theo is her son. She is a beautiful and a hopeless romantic and one who possesses graceful elegance. A classic musical theater leading lady. 
Must be comfortable on stage in under garments. 
Dance: Required. Range: F#3 – Db5

Catherine

Lewis’s mother and Pippin’s stepmother, Fastrada is entirely devoted to Lewis’s happiness and her own power. She wants to put Lewis on the throne at all costs, even if it means defying her husband, Charlemagne. She is beautiful, devious, crafty, cunning, and untrustworthy.  A character actress of power who plays the antagonist. 
Dance: Required. Vocal Range: A3 - F5

Fastrada

Catherine’s son. A kind boy whose best friend is a pet duck. Theo awakens Pippin's sense of self, responsibility, sacrifice, and love. A strong male actor who can portray a young boy. 
Must be comfortable on stage stripped down to undergarments.

Theo

6 dancers/singers heavily featured throughout. Ensemble “Players” play many other roles; they represent the influences and voices in Pippin’s head. Understudies for principal roles, if deemed necessary, will come from ensemble.

What to prepare: Please come to auditions with a prepared song that best fits the style of Grease and your vocal abilities. Prepare 32 bars of music.  A piano player will be available. You may also use a CD, Iphone, or bluetooth to perform your song. Acapella will not be allowed!
This show will be performed with a live band.
Call-backs: October 24th at 7:00 PM.
Call-backs will consist of readings from the script.

(Range: Soprano, A3–F#5) - New girl in town; sweet, wholesome, naive, cute, and innocent.

SANDY DUMBROWSKI

(Range: Alto A3– C5) - Leader of the Pink Ladies; tough, sarcastic and outspoken but vulnerable.

BETTY RIZZO

(Range: Alto, A3–D5) - A dreamer; good-natured but not too smart, she is heavily made up, fussy about her appearance, particularly her hair. She can't wait to finish high school so she can be a beautician.

FRENCHY

(Range Alto, C4–C5) - The 'beauty' of the Pink Ladies; pretty and looks older than the other girls, but betrays her real age when she opens her mouth. She tries to act sophisticated.

MARTY

(Range: Alto, A3-C5) - Funny, loud, compulsive eater and awkward member of the Pink Ladies. Loud and pushy with the girls, but shy with boys.

(Range: Tenor, D4-A5) - the youngest of the guys; small, boyish and open, with a disarming smile and a hero-worshipping attitude towards the other guys. He also plays the guitar.

DOODY

(Range: Tenor, C4–F5) - the second in command of the Burger Palace Boys; tough-looking, tattooed, surly and avoids any show of softness. He has an offbeat sense of humor.

KENICKIE

(Range: baritone, G3–A5) - A member of the Burger Palace Boys; funny Italian-American, he is a braggart and wheeler-dealer who thinks he's a real lady-killer

SONNY LATIERRI

(Range: Tenor, D4-A5) - the anything-for-a-laugh stocky type of boy; a clown who enjoys winding people up, he is full of mischief and is always dreaming up half-baked schemes and ideas.

ROGER

(Range: Ensemble/Part Flexible) - A typical 'teen audience' disc jockey; slick, egotistical and fast-talking. He is also a veteran 'Greaser.'

VINCE FONTAINE

(Range: Alto, C4–C5) - The best dancer at St. Bernadette's; a loud mouth, she wins the dancing competition with Danny.

CHA-CHA, aka CHARLENE DIGREGORIO

(Range: Tenor, A3– E5) - The class valedictorian; physically awkward, with weak eyes and a high pitched voice. He's a typical 'apple-polisher' - both smug and pompous, but gullible.

EUGENE FLORCZYK

(Range: Tenor, G4- E5) - All-American, rock-star “greaser” student at Rydell High, whose real name is Clarence.

JOHNNY CASINO

(Range: Ensemble/Part Flexible) - A no-nonsense, serious, loud, English teacher.

MISS LYNCH

(Range: Alto, D4- A4) - A typical cheerleader; attractive, athletic, sure-of-herself, but can be given to bursts of disconcerting enthusiasm. She's a bit of a pain and unpopular with the Pink Ladies, and can twirl a baton

About the project: 
"Gambler, Sky Masterson makes a bet with his buddy Nathan Detroit that he can persuade the Save-A-Soul Missionary babe, Sarah Brown, to take a trip with him to Havana. Meanwhile, Nathan is doing his best to remain unmarried to his long-time fiancée, Adelaide. Set in New York City in the mid-20th century, amid gamblers, showgirls, and evangelical missionaries, the story is colorful and the characters memorable."

What to prepare: please prepare 32 bars of a song in the style of the show that displays your vocal range. Please bring appropriate dancewear as some actors may be put through a basic dance audition. Actors may also be asked to read from the script.
Production dates: January 20 – February 5, 2023.

(Baritone or Tenor to F): the organizer of the floating crap game; a slightly neurotic, lovable rogue who is always struggling to stay one step ahead of the pack — and looking for the big break he never seems to get; his heart is torn between the camaraderie of his gambling circle and Adelaide, to whom he has been engaged for 14 years; an excellent actor with strong comedic timing

Nathan Detroit

(Mezzo to A): an attractive nightclub singer/dancer at the “Hot Box” and Nathan’s long-suffering fiancée, this role requires a strong belter with dancing ability and excellent comedic skills; she adores Nathan but is driven so crazy by his antics that she famously develops “psychosomatic symptoms involving the upper respiratory tract”.

Miss Adelaide

(Baritone B to Eb): he is a suave, intelligent, and confident gangster who naturally commands others’ respect and attention; handsome, with excellent stage presence, he is familiar with attracting the attention of the ladies but finds himself falling in love with the one woman who brushes off his advances; some dance/movement ability would be useful but is not essential.

Sky Masterson

(Soprano to High A): prim Salvation Army officer with a genuine passion for missionary work; gives Sky a frosty reception, but after a little too much rum, her straight-laced persona slips away; this role requires a versatile singing actress with range that includes stern, romantic, comedic, and drunk.

Sarah Brown

(Lyric Baritone): Sarah’s grandfather and a prominent missionary at the Save-a-Soul Mission; wise, warm, and caring.

Arvide Abernathy

(Featured Supporting Role | Tenor to High Bb): Nathan Detroit’s best pal, whose appetite and enthusiasm know no bounds; comic, cheerful, and likable as he delivers funny one-liners and several of the show’s most well-known numbers with equal aplomb, including “Fugue for Tinhorns” and the show-stopping “Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat.”

Nicely-Nicely Johnson

(Featured Supporting Role | Baritone): Nicely’s somewhat dim pal who sings “Fugue for Tinhorns” and “Guys and Dolls.”; upbeat, sometimes nervy, and further down the pecking order among the gamblers.

Benny Southstreet

(Baritone): featured singer in “Fugue for Tinhorns” with Nicely & Benny, and then joins the ensemble.

Rusty Charlie

The quintessential tough guy gambler; has come into money by collecting the reward on his father; sidekick and mouthpiece to Big Jule, so – though a pleasant rogue – is more on the ball and can be a cool customer who is able to stand his ground when necessary; sings with the ensemble but not alone.

Harry The Horse

(Age 35+): an intimidating hustler from Chicago; a temperamental sore loser; stage presence and acting ability are the main requirements for this comedic speaking role; the role can be played by an actor of large height and stature to match his name, or it can be played by a diminutive actor as an ironic and comic gesture.

Big Jule

(Non-singing Role/Age 35+): a member of the local police force, wise to the gangsters’ exploits and trying to keep them in order; commands respect from Nathan and the guys.

Lt. Brannigan

(Mezzo): regional representative of the Salvation Army; authoritative but motivated by charity; some comic moments.

General Cartwright

Performers will back-up Adelaide in her nightclub act; they will perform two numbers with Adelaide, including a tasteful striptease; must be comfortable with form-fitting costuming; they will also double as Havana dancers; may double as Runyonland characters; cameo roles such as Mimi will be cast from this group. Also, Female singers who move but need not be skilled dancers will be part of the Mission Band; may double as Runyonland; cameo roles will be cast from this group as well.

Female Ensemble

Male Dancers who Sing will be featured in “Luck Be a Lady” and as Havana dancers; may double as Runyonland characters; cameo gambler roles will be cast from this group. Male singers who Move but may not be skilled dancers will be considered to sing some of the greatest male ensemble numbers in musical theatre (e.g., “Oldest Established,” “Luck Be A Lady”); some will be featured in the Mission Band; may double as Runyonland characters; several cameo roles will be cast from this group.
