Lead, a fourth generation Japanese Canadian (Generation Yonsei). The story follows Fiona after the death of her grandmother, Nancy, unable to process her grief. In her search for closure, she explores the shared history of the Japanese Canadian Community that has been absent from her life for so long. Fiona is a young woman, and as independent as she may be, she fears the uncertainty looming in her future. Instead clinging to the homely past that is sure to never return.
Nancy Kitagawa is Fiona’s grandmother and the emotional core of the film. They see her in flashbacks, crafting origami with her young granddaughter. An old, wise, and balanced soul, Nancy’s rooted nature is the polar opposite of Fiona’s tangled character.
Carol is an employee at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre who Fiona meets on her journey for closure. Carol’s tales of Nancy and fellow Japanese Canadians are the breakthrough moment for Fiona. Carol’s graceful presence in Fiona’s life helps form a bridge between Fiona and the Japanese-Canadian community and understand the significance of Japanese-Canadian History.
