"A Christmas Carol" Show Needs Performers

Scrooge’s underpaid and overworked clerk and the devoted father of the Cratchit family. This adaptation gives Bob substantial dramatic material, including an emotionally demanding future sequence in which he struggles with grief, guilt, and the loss of his son. Seeking a warm, grounded actor who can balance humor, tenderness, restraint, and considerable emotional depth. This is a nonsinging role. Compensation: $200 total stipend. Scrooge’s cheerful, good-hearted nephew and Samantha’s husband. Fred is charming, optimistic, compassionate, and persistent in his desire to form a relationship with his uncle. Although Scrooge repeatedly rejects him, Fred refuses to become bitter and continues to believe there is goodness beneath his uncle’s cold exterior. One actor portrays two sharply contrasting characters. Jacob Marley is Scrooge’s deceased business partner, condemned to wander in the chains he forged through a lifetime of greed. He returns as a frightening, tormented, and urgent supernatural presence to warn Scrooge that he still has a chance to escape the same fate. Old Joe is a rough, opportunistic dealer who appraises and purchases items stolen from Scrooge’s deathbed.

Young Jacob Marley is Scrooge’s fellow apprentice at Fezziwig’s warehouse and an early influence on his pursuit of wealth. He is ambitious, witty, teasing, and socially confident, encouraging the more reserved Young Scrooge to enjoy the party and pursue Belle. Topper is one of Fred and Samantha’s lively Christmas guests: playful, theatrical, flirtatious, and determined not to be bored.

Fred’s wife. Samantha is lively, direct, warm, and fully engaged in the joy of Christmas. She initiates the party game at Fred’s gathering, playfully joins the teasing about Scrooge, and openly expresses her frustration with his treatment of Fred. Compensation: $200 total stipend. Bob and Mrs. Cratchit’s eldest daughter. Martha works outside the family home and arrives late on Christmas after working through the previous night and morning. This is a nonsinging role. Performers ages 18 and older receive a $200 total stipend. Audition material: Martha Cratchit side. Actors may also submit an optional singing selection if they would like to be considered for ensemble singing.

Casting performers to portray members of a three-person Narrator ensemble. The Narrators guide the audience through the story, deliver much of Dickens’s descriptive language, interact directly with Scrooge’s world, and help create fluid transitions between locations and periods. We are looking for a physical performer who is comfortable with puppeteering and can bring precision, control, and expressive physicality to the role. No previous puppeteering experience is required.
