Atticus’s daughter and Jem’s sister. She delivers the opening and closing lines and provides much of the narrative voice. While the novel is told from her perspective, the play shares the story with Jem and Dill.
Scout’s older brother, on the cusp of adulthood. He is determined to protect his sister and father from the prejudice and potential violence of the summer’s events.
A property lawyer in Maycomb County, Alabama, and the play’s protagonist. He defends Tom Robinson, a Black man falsely accused of raping Mayella Ewell. In the original novel, Atticus is the embodiment of justice and empathy; in Sorkin’s version, he is portrayed as a flawed protagonist.
Originally a maid for the Finch family’s maternal grandmother, she has raised Scout, Jem, and Atticus after their mother’s death. She is the one who challenges Atticus’s belief that everyone is good, even when that is not true.
Stays with Aunt Rachel in Maycomb. He pretends his father is a train engineer but admits he has never met him and that his mother is “looking for a new dad.” Dill co narrates with Scout and Jem, often providing humour through his naivety.
