"The Crucible" Audition for the Theater

(Male-identifying). The minister of Salem’s church. He takes pride in his power, which he believes is divined from above, and is appalled by those who would question it or challenge him.

(Female-identifying). An enslaved woman in the Parris household. She is accused of witchcraft, and pressured to participate in the accusations, and is ultimately haunted by hallucinations.

(Female-identifying). Reverend Parris’s niece. Abigail once served in the Proctor household, but Elizabeth fired her after discovering that Abigail was having an affair with John. Abigail has intelligence and street smarts, but the traumas she’s experienced in her past leaves her rageful and ready to fight for her own survival no matter the costs.

(Female-identifying). One of Abigail’s group of girls who participates in the ritual in the woods. She’s nervous and worried. She works for Dr. Griggs.

(Male-identifying). A wealthy and influential member of the community, who uses the trials to increase his own wealth by buying up the land of those he personally accuses of witchcraft.

(Female-identifying). Thomas’s wife. Only one of her eight children has survived (Ruth), and Ann is convinced that the other 7, all of whom died at a day old, were murdered by supernatural means.

(Female-identifying). Described as “sly and merciless”, she looks to Abigail to learn how to have power in a world working to strip it from her.

(Female-identifying). A servant in the Proctor household and one of Abigail’s group of girls. She’s timid and easily influenced by those around her. She tries to expose the hoax but is stopped by the other girls from doing so. She ultimately recants her confession of witchcraft and turns on John Proctor.

(Male-identifying). A local farmer who lives just outside of Salem. Elizabeth Proctor’s husband. He carries a heavy burden which gives him a quickness to anger and even violence and makes him allergic to hypocrisy. He is a man who is searching for the truth of who he is, and once he finds it, it leads to his death.

(Female-identifying). John Proctor’s wife. She is virtuous and uses that as a way to protect herself from her more complex feelings about her husband and herself.

(Male-identifying). A wealthy man who is respected by most people in Salem but is an enemy of Thomas and Ann Putnam.

(Female-identifying). Francis’s wife. Wise, sensible, and upright, and held in high esteem by most of the community. She falls victim to the hysteria when she is accused of witchcraft and refuses to confess.

(Male-identifying). An elderly farmer and friend to John Proctor. He is famous for his litigious nature. His wife is one of the accused, and he is eventually held in contempt of court and sentenced to death. Nonetheless, he still refuses to accuse anyone else or confess.

(Male-identifying). A young minister reputed to be an expert on witchcraft who is called in to examine Betty Parris. He has a critical mind and that saves him from falling into the blind fervor his arrival creates. He comes to regret his part in the hysteria and tries to save the lives of the accused.

(Male-identifying). Deputy Governor of Massachusetts, and the presiding judge over the witch trials. He sees himself as honest and scrupulous and is convinced that he is doing right.

(Male-identifying). Second in command to Danforth, and also a judge presiding over the trials. Cold and antagonistic, he believes strongly in his own importance, and is willfully ignorant to any dissent coming from the community.

(Male-identifying). He does what he feels he needs to in order to survive. He acts as the clerk of the court during the trials. He quickly turns on his former friends and handles their arrests.

(Male-identifying). The deputy jailer of the court.

(Female-identifying). One of the first to be accused, she is poor and often rejected by the community. Pregnant at the trial, she gives birth while in jail, but the baby dies. Her prolonged imprisonment, combined with the loss of her child, drives her to madness.
