About the project: A staged ensemble work celebrating the survival of African people in the New World and embodying the transformative power of memory, story, and ritual to heal historical trauma. Rate: $850 stipend for the run. Additional info: Rehearsals begin on or around September 20 in Laurel, MD. Staged readings: November 1 and December 6 at the Montpelier Arts Center, Laurel, MD. (Female-presenting) - An African American writer and lecturer, Ṣeéwo (pronounced Shaywo) has physical symptoms of a strange illness which cannot be explained. Doubles as EFUA ASANTÉ, Amma's mother, a dignified and well-formed Ashantee woman, the wife of a warrior/hunter, and herself a skilled fighter.
(Female-presenting) - A maturing Ashantee girl, Amma creates a community of care among the captives in the fortress dungeon.
(Male-presenting) - A well-built young West African of the Fantee people, Quobna, the son of a chief, has lived a life of privilege and has learned to lead. Quobna reads the letters from GODWIN OTCHIE, a young drafting student from coastal Ghana, West Africa.
(Female-presenting) - Part priestess, part diva, Betty Moaning Woman sings, screams, sighs and moans to transcend pain and to create ritual or "sanctified" space wherein healing can occur. Doubles as MARY BAPTIST, a Christian penitent.
(Male-presenting) - A strong man, he is the "enforcer" aboard the slaveship, the Lark. Doubles as BILAL, a Muslim Wolof man. Bilal offers traditional prayers in Arabic.
(Female-presenting) - A captive Wolof speaking girl. Doubles as Iya, a young Ifa initiate.
(Male-presenting) - An African priest or Babalorixa, Baba is the spiritual leader of Africans in "Limbo."
