About the play: With a few drinks and some “Ayes!” three fishermen on a small island off the coast of Nova Scotia declare independence from Canada: henceforth, they shall be known as the Princes of the Principality of Outer Baldonia! It’s 1948 when Russ, Elson, and Ron discover that the Canadian government plans to open their Atlantic commercial fishing rights to the Spanish, posing an overcrowding threat to business and wildlife. Russ, a vacationing American lawyer, has just purchased Outer Bald Tusket Island for $750. With a newly erected stone lodge, plenty of fish, two new friends, and just enough frustration about rules and regulations, Russ can do what he pleases, including requesting official recognition from the United Nations for his fledgling state and declaring war on the USSR. Based on an absolutely true story, this hilarious play about friendship shows that when ordinary people set out to do extraordinary things, the possibilities are endless. Male-presenting, Adult - An American lawyer, sport fisherman, dreamer, and eventual self-styled Prince of Princes of Outer Baldonia. Russ is charismatic, intelligent, enthusiastic, and just eccentric enough to convince his friends that turning a tiny fishing island into an independent country is a perfectly reasonable idea.
Male-presenting, Adult - Elson is a Nova Scotian fisherman, storyteller, and eventual High Chancellor of Baldonia. Practical, dry, opinionated, and quick-witted, he is one of the play’s primary storytellers and shares a fast-paced, constantly interrupting rapport with Ron. This actor will also portray Miguel, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation to the Kingdom of Spain, who encounters Russ in the diplomatic world and confronts him over Baldonia's actions toward Spain.
Male-presenting, Adult - A Nova Scotian fisherman and eventual Ambassador Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary of Baldonia. Ron is a natural storyteller with a talent for exaggeration and a knack for getting completely swept up in Russ’s schemes. Warm, enthusiastic, and funny, with strong comic timing and chemistry with Elson and Russ.
Female-presenting, Adult - Russ’s highly organized Washington secretary. Flo begins as the composed, efficient professional left behind to deal with her boss’s increasingly bizarre activities but gradually finds herself becoming part of the Baldonian government herself. Dry comedic delivery and the ability to remain completely composed amid escalating absurdity are key.
Female-presenting, Adult - A formidable Soviet diplomat and Minister of External Affairs. Intelligent, confident, politically savvy, and difficult to intimidate, Anna encounters Russ in the international diplomatic world and quickly becomes an important influence on the fledgling Prince. Requires strong presence and sharp comedic instincts.
Smaller voice-over roles that will be prerecorded for the production. These roles will not require participation in regular rehearsals or live performances. We are seeking performers with clear vocal delivery and the ability to bring character and personality through voice alone. The CBC Announcer calls for strong diction and the sound and energy of a polished period radio news broadcaster, while the Ball Announcer requires a more formal, grand, and ceremonial delivery.
