LEAD Rebellious teen who disagrees with his family’s practices. Has slowly been collecting confiscated books with his friend in hopes to learn about the outside world. But this might be bigger than he thinks…
LEAD James’s father. He’s both excited to succeed Grandfather and to give James a larger role in the family and community. Thinks of himself as the most important person in the room.
SUPPORTING James’s best friend and sole confidant. Hates how his parents blindly follow Grandfather’s teachings, and helps James hide books from James’s family and the other townspeople.
SUPPORTING Patriarch of the town, seen as having divine powers by the townspeople. He is the one everyone looks to for guidance and answers. [NOTE: This is a non-speaking role with minimal movement].
SUPPORTING A rebel in the town, does not agree with Grandfather or the family’s practices.
SUPPORTING William’s father. Die-hard loyalty to Grandfather’s guidance.
SUPPORTING Another blind follower of Grandfather. Seeks answers about the threatening “outsiders.”
