Diane is an unsentimental, matter-of-fact kind of person. She doesn't open up to people very easily and has a dry, sarcastic sense of humor. She feels lost in the world and a need to run away, not being comfortable at home but not exactly comfortable where she's at now either.
Mike is somewhat eccentric, emotionally stunted, and bordering on a midlife crisis. He harbors a superiority complex that is based mostly on disappointment and cynicism. He keeps dating younger women who keep leaving him and is obsessed with sci-fi from the 80s and 90s.
