About the play: An original hour-long ensemble dark comedy-drama with a strong musical, visual and nightlife identity. Think: messy found family, dark humour, queer energy, friendship, sex, ambition, addiction, music and the increasingly desperate ways people try to escape themselves. Set primarily in Toronto, the pilot follows Ryan, an outreach worker and former performer whose carefully constructed life has started feeling strangely hollow. One unexpected night pulls him into an underground nightlife world populated by DJs, artists, beautiful disasters, philosophers, weirdos and future best friends — and gradually wakes up a version of himself he thought he’d lost. What begins as one night out turns into an increasingly chaotic after-hours gathering at his condo and the accidental formation of a fiercely connected new family. The series is semi-autobiographical and draws from real experiences, pushed through a heightened cinematic lens: funny, messy, euphoric, occasionally outrageous and ultimately very human. He can charm a room full of strangers, deliver an inspirational speech for a living and make vulnerability disappear under a perfectly timed joke.
Quick-witted, fearless and impossible to embarrass. Kat has a razor-sharp tongue, zero patience for bullshit and the confidence to turn a stranger into her new husband within five minutes of meeting him. Instinctive, affectionate and wildly spontaneous, she barrels through life on intuition — but beneath the irreverence is someone fiercely perceptive, emotionally intelligent and loyal to her people. A magnetic free spirit, philosopher and born comedian who approaches the dance floor with something close to religious devotion. Barbie is the high priestess of dance — she worships at the temple of music. Ridiculous one second and unexpectedly profound the next, she can make complete nonsense sound like ancient wisdom and occasionally make ancient wisdom sound completely ridiculous. Beneath the chaos is enormous heart and emotional intelligence.
Queen Vee. Warm, brazen, theatrical and completely at home in her own skin. She can sit on a security guard’s lap like a throne, command a dance floor with a ridiculous chant and then, ten seconds later, look straight through somebody’s armour and tell them exactly what they needed to hear. Vee is the unofficial matriarch of the group — part hype woman, part philosopher, part benevolent monarch.
A golden retriever with a gym membership and access to DJ equipment. Matt is loud, physical, shameless, competitive, affectionate and fundamentally incapable of entering a room quietly. He loves being looked at, loves winding up his friends and possesses the specific confidence of a man who knows he looks good shirtless.
Ryan’s younger brother, roommate and accidental voice of reason. Slightly old-fashioned, dryly funny and domestically competent enough to be cooking roast tenderloin while Ryan is preparing to implode his life. Brady idolized his older brother growing up, which means he also notices before almost anyone else that Ryan has stopped being himself. He loves him enough to call him on it.
A trans femme performance artist, activist, local celebrity and glorious diva — Ryan’s longtime best friend. Think Cruella de Vil meets Glinda the Good Witch. Judy is theatrical because ordinary life simply does not deserve her cooperation. Glamorous, filthy-minded, wickedly funny and aggressively affectionate, she calls Ryan “puppy,” refers to herself as Mummy and can turn getting dressed for a Pride party into a full theatrical event.
Handsome, muscular and larger than life, with effortless swagger and a subtle French accent. Denali looks like he should be the intimidating guy in the room and then immediately reveals himself to be an affectionate, slightly ridiculous chosen brother. He is fiercely protective of Barbie without trying to control her, happy to hype her up like she’s the most magnificent creature on earth and equally happy to laugh when she starts behaving like a pterodactyl.
Sleek, stylish, cool as a blade and very difficult to rattle. A DJ and one half of the scene’s resident power couple, Bri has learned that dating Matt requires the patience of a saint and the verbal reflexes of a professional assassin. Where Matt expands to fill every room, Bri watches, assesses and waits for exactly the right moment to puncture his ego.
Boyish, eager and genuinely talented — an up-and-coming DJ at that delicious stage where success is beginning to happen and he’s trying very hard to act like it’s no big deal. It is a big deal. James wants badly to be taken seriously, which makes the moments when his pride or excitement leaks through especially charming. Sweet-natured but not a pushover, he has a competitive, teasing little-brother dynamic with Matt and enough confidence to give it right back when Matt starts chirping him.
A burly, bearded Viking with twinkling Santa-Claus eyes who somehow moves through a nightclub with the grace of a prima ballerina. Kyle is flamboyant, affectionate, gloriously strange and frequently eating or distributing food nobody remembers him acquiring.
