The play chronicles the real-life experiences of the people of Gander, and the almost 7000 airline passengers who were forced to land there when US air space was closed on September 11, 2001. Twelve actors tell the story of both the Islanders and the Plane People, revealing the fear and uncertainty that came with the terrorist attacks – as well as the profound generosity and compassion of strangers. While some characters and stories are an amalgamation of several people and experiences, others are grounded in true people, such as Captain Beverley Bass, the first female captain for American Airlines; Kevin Tuerff and Kevin Jung, the couple from LA; and Nick and Diane, the couple who met in Gander. (Doubles as Derm and Brenda’s brother, Eddie) The dedicated mayor of Gander. He leads the town’s response to the arrival of the diverted planes, coordinating with local organizations to ensure that all 7,000 stranded passengers are taken care of. Gregarious and well-liked, Claude loves his work, the townspeople and his daily traditions, but he's never had to deal with a crisis of this magnitude before. (Doubles as Martha) An animal welfare worker in Gander who is deeply concerned about the pets on the grounded planes. Bonnie goes out of her way to ensure that the animals are safe and comfortable, reflecting the town’s spirit of kindness. A no-nonsense mother of three, Bonnie is the head of the Gander area SPCA. Voice: Mezzo with belt up to B.
(Doubles as Delores) A warm-hearted local schoolteacher in Gander. She helps to organize the town’s efforts to care for the stranded passengers and befriends many of them, offering comfort and support during their stay. She is the head of the Gander Legion and has a firefighter son. Voice: Mezzo with belt up to B.
(Doubles as Joey, Customs Officer, Mr. Michaels, Terry, Matty, Rabbi, Head Cardiologist) A local police officer who helps maintain order during the chaotic arrival of the passengers. He is a steady presence, assisting with logistics and ensuring that everyone remains safe. He is a quirky constable in the two-person Gander police force. Required to cover many roles. (Doubles as Britney and Flight Attendant) A young eager local news reporter covering the events as they unfold in Gander, Janice is new to her job and finds herself overwhelmed by the magnitude of the story but grows through the experience. Janice is thrown into the deep end on her first day. Initially naive about the world, Janice must face the pain and confusion around her. Voice: Contemporary Soprano with strong pop belt and a mix up to E.
(Doubles as Annette and Reporter) The female American Airlines captain and the first woman to be promoted to captain at American Airlines. Beverley shares her story of her love for flying, her experiences as a pilot, and the shock of being grounded. Her song, “Me and the Sky,” is one of the musical’s most powerful moments. Voice: Strong mezzo with an easy mixed or belted C#.
(Doubles as Crystal and Brenda) A traditional divorcee from Texas, who is terrified that her son may have been flying at the time of the attacks. When she finds out that he's safe, she's given a new lease on life and discovers a wilder, more carefree side of herself. She finds herself unexpectedly falling in love while stranded in Gander. Voice: Warm, natural contemporary Soprano with strong mix up to D.
(Doubles as Doug, Officer Stephenson, Male Townsperson) A British passenger who meets Diane in Gander. Their blossoming romance is a surprising and tender aspect of the story, showing how connections can form even in the most unlikely circumstances. An oil engineer who is usually focused on his work, Nick's life is turned upside down when he falls for Diane. Voice: Warm, natural Baritone or Baritenor with an easy E and strong pop sensibility.
(Doubles as Garth and President George W. Bush) Kevin T. is travelling with Kevin Jung (his boyfriend and secretary), and together they navigate the stress and uncertainty of being stranded. Kevin T’s story touches on the challenges faced by their relationship in a time of crisis, and the support they find from the community. Voice: Strong contemporary Tenor up to G.
(Doubles as Dwight and Ali) Kevin T’s boyfriend and secretary. Initially, sarcastic and unhappy, he wants to leave as soon as possible. As one half of a couple travelling together, Kevin struggles with the uncertainty and tension of their situation in Gander but finds moments of connection with the locals. His relationship with Kevin T. is tested by the stress of their circumstances. Voice: Tenor or Baritenor.

Bristol) A hardened New Yorker, Bob is suspicious of where he's landed, fearing that it's World War 3, that someone is going to shoot him and steal his wallet - but instead, he ends up losing his New York jadedness. He is initially skeptical and nervous about the hospitality of the locals. As he spends more time in Gander, Bob learns to appreciate the generosity and openness of the community, and he becomes an active part of their efforts.Voice: Baritone
(Doubles as Margie and Mickey) A passenger who is deeply worried about her son, a New York firefighter who is missing in the aftermath of the attacks. Hannah’s story is one of a mother’s love and fear, as she leans on the support of the locals during her difficult wait. Hannah is often comforted by Beulah.
