June is someone who is both capable of immense cruelty and caring deeply for Ember, Throughout most of the film, she’s going to be a more stoic character with occasional bits of compassion, breaking through whenever she has a chance to reach Ember. The underline motivation for all of June’s actions in this film is love for Ember, every action she does, including killing Diego is to win the affection of Ember.
Ember is someone who is, in a word, a pushover. Someone who has trouble defending herself at times, but also someone who is immensely forgiving to the people around her, it’s evident she cares for Diego deeply in spite of everything.
