Actors Needed for "The Ferryman" Play Audition

Female Presenting Quinn’s wife and in her thirties. She and Quinn have seven children, with the youngest still a baby. However, Mary has kept to her room for several years with an unspecified ailment. She depends upon her older children to help out with chores and look after the baby. She and Quinn have lost their intimacy, and she leaves the running of the house to her sister-in-law, Caitlin.

Male Presenting From Derry, Northern Ireland, a prominent member of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and is feared by many. Muldoon is violent and threatening, using his influence to organize terrorist activities in Northern Ireland. He recruits Shane Corcoran, an impressionable young man, to be his eyes and ears on the street. However, Shane is only valuable to him if he keeps his mouth shut and his head down, as there are plenty of others to take his place.

Male Presenting A Northern Irish priest in his fifties. He has known the Carney family for many years and is the family’s priest. Because of his connection with the family, Father Horrigan is picked up by Muldoon, a member of the IRA, to reveal everything he knows about Quinn Carney. Father Horrigan is a deeply moral man who has been placed in a no-win situation as he feels he must tell Quinn and Caitlin about the IRA’s investigation.

Female Presenting Quinn’s elderly aunt. She has a fierce hated of Margaret Thatcher and her policies in Northern Ireland. Aunt Pat had an older brother, whom she loved dearly. However, he was killed during the Easter Rising of 1916 and she has never forgiven the British for his death. Aunt Pat listens vigilantly to the radio, to keep herself informed on current political activity.

Male Presenting Quinn’s uncle and is in his seventies. He enjoys reminiscing about his childhood and spouting off about Greek mythology. He also enjoys a drink and begins drinking early in the day. By the evening of the harvest celebrations, he is drunk and falls down the hill coming back to the house. Although he is in his seventies, Uncle Pat is still expected to help out around the farm, and goes with the men to bring the harvest in.

Male Presenting Caitlin’s only son. He and his mother have lived with his aunt and uncle ever since he was four years old. His father went missing when he was a small boy and Oisin never knew what happened to him. Oisin overhears the truth about his father’s demand at the hands of the IRA, but is annoyed that his mother does not share the truth with him. He is bitter and lurks in the shadows to listen in on people’s conversations.

Male Presenting Quinn and Mary’s eldest son. He is due to inherit the family farm from his father, which he is very proud of. JJ is a hard worker and been brought up on the land. He has many duties around the farm, and goes with the rest of the men to bring the harvest in. Unlike his younger brother, Michael, JJ is quiet and sensible. He doesn’t like their cousin, Shane, talking about Caitlin behind her back and tries to shut him up.

Male Presenting Shane Corcoran is seventeen years old. He and his brothers, Diarmaid and Declan, are cousins of the Carney children. Shane and his brothers arrive at the Carney’s farm to help bring in the harvest and celebrate with the family. However, when he has too much to drink he becomes loud and aggressive, and it doesn’t take too much encouragement from Diarmaid for him to boast about his work for the IRA.

Male Presenting Outspoken, extrovert of all the Carney children. Michael enjoys teasing and poking fun at others, often being cruel and unfeeling in the process. Although he is only fifteen years old*, Michael enjoys a drink and curses frequently. Despite his jokes, Michael is fiercely protective over his family, and he dislikes Shane’s jibes about Caitlin and Seamus.

Female Presenting Eldest daughter of Quinn and Mary and has been put in charge of taking care of the baby of the family. She is kind and caring with the baby, but views her sickly mother as lazy for not taking care of the baby herself. Caught between being a child and an adult, she is expected to carry out duties around the farm, but is also ushered out of the room when an unsuitable topic of conversation arises.

Female Presenting Second oldest daughter of Quinn and Mary, she now has chores to do around the farm with her brothers. She is curious about the conversations she hears around her, and asks a lot of questions. Along with her younger siblings, Nunu is often ushered out of the room by the adults when the topic of conversation becomes unsuitable. 11

Male Presenting Pronounced DEAR-MED. He and his brothers, Shane and Declan, are cousins of the Carney children, and they live in Derry. They have come to the Carney farm to help with the harvest and celebrate with the family. Diarmaid enjoys his drink and banter with the boys. He eggs on Shane to tell stories about his activities with the IRA, knowing that it’s easy to get him talking about a few drinks.
