Roberto is a hard man — but the horror of him is that he's never cruel. He's almost gentle when he closes the door on his own child. Churchgoing, controlled, certain. He appears in two scenes: the film's opening (watching his young child at church with a fist slowly curling against his leg) and a key flashback — the moment he steps into the doorway, moves his crying wife behind him, and tells Ava she can take a plate to go.
