About the play: It’s 1959 and West Side Story?is all that anyone can talk about. Inez Candelaria works as an usher on Broadway but hopes that her talented and dance-obsessed children will find fame on the other side of the footlights. Meanwhile, the family nervously counts the days until a neighborhood-wide eviction abruptly threatens everything they have worked for. Additional information: Rehearsal Starts: January 29, 2027. She believes in the American Dream but worships at the altar of Broadway’s Musical Theater. Wife to a circuit dance and show man, she prioritizes dance, music and acting lessons over food and rent. Must have a strong dance background. Some singing required.
He/him. Latinx. Inez’s eldest son. Oldest sibling and de facto caretaker of the family, including his mother. Responsible, practical and centered person. He also was a professional dancer as a child and deep inside he longs to escape from the overwhelming and at times stifling responsibility for his family. He is frustrated by the real life circumstances that haven’t allowed him the opportunity to break free and pursue his dreams. Must have a strong dance background (ex. modern jazz, ballet).
He/him) - Age: 17 y/o; played by adult. Ethnicity: Latinx. Inez’ younger son. Younger brother and wise guy. Unlike his two siblings, he is not a dancer, but makes up for it with his enthusiasm and personality. He harbors ambitions of being the next Puerto Rican Marlon Brando.
She/her - Age: 16 y/o; played by an adult. Latinx. Inez’s daughter. A little Inez in the making. Loves to dream more than rehearse but has real talent. Sweet, unfocused, and starry eyed. Grows up a lot in a year. Must have a strong dance background. Some singing required.
He/him. A young man Inez has raised. Ambitious and charismatic man who has made it into the inner circle of Broadway as Jerome Robbins assistant. He is the family’s shining example that success is within reach. Jamie can dance well and holds access into casting choices for musicals. Talented, hardworking but learned from Inez how to work the system. Has been absent from the family on his climb to success. Rival to Alejandro. Must have a strong dance background.
