Talent Needed for a Short Film - "Shades of Identity"

Lena is a sixteen-year-old girl defined by the contrast between her internal brilliance and the external pressures of colorism. For years, she has viewed her dark skin through the distorted lens of her bullies, leading to a fragile self-esteem and a tendency to "fade into the background."

Maya is Lena’s older sister and the charismatic "golden girl" of their social circle. Radiant, outgoing, and effortlessly popular, she moves through the world with a confidence that stems from never being told she doesn't belong. While she loves Lena fiercely, her light-skin privilege creates a massive blind spot in their relationship.

James is the eldest sibling, often existing in a self-imposed bubble of sports, academics, or his own future ambitions. As the only boy, he views his sisters' lives as a "storm of drama" he’d rather not weather. By staying neutral and "staying in his lane," he inadvertently leaves Lena to face her battles without a brother’s protection.

Mrs. Jones is the emotional anchor of the family, but she is also a woman caught in a painful tug-of-war. Unlike the rest of the family, she doesn't ignore Lena’s pain; she breathes it with her. However, her deep involvement often manifests as a frantic desire to "prepare" Lena for a world she knows is unfair, sometimes pushing too hard in the process.

Mr. Jones is the steady, quiet presence in the household—the "calm in the storm." While he loves his daughters more than anything, he often finds himself out of his depth when it comes to the complex social hierarchies and emotional nuances of their lives. He views his role as the provider and the protector, but he struggles to protect them from things he cannot physically see or touch.

Tyla is the sharp, polished, and deeply prejudiced antagonist of the story. She isn’t just a "mean girl"; she is a gatekeeper who uses her social status and influence in the fashion world to enforce a narrow, colorist standard of beauty. To Tyla, the runway is a hierarchy, and she firmly believes she belongs at the top while Lena belongs in the shadows.

Camila is Tyla’s loyal shadow and "right-hand woman." While Tyla provides the vision and the cruelty, Camila provides the audience and the reinforcement. She is the classic enabler—someone who values her spot in the "inner circle" more than her own moral compass, making her just as dangerous as Tyla in the halls of their school.

Aaron is the third pillar of Tyla’s elite trio. As Tyla’s "style consultant" and closest confidant, he brings a sharp wit and a high-fashion sensibility to their group. However, his presence adds a layer of complexity to the group's dynamic; he is a member of the LGBTQ+ community who has fought for his own seat at the table, yet he uses his influence to help Tyla pull the chairs out from under others.

Principal Warren is a no-nonsense administrator who takes immense pride in his school’s reputation. She views himself as a fair arbiter of justice, but her "old school" approach to discipline often focuses on the physical actions she can see, rather than the emotional roots she doesn't quite understand.

She is a specialist in adolescent psychology with a focus on identity and racial trauma. She is the first person Lena has encountered outside of her family who does not try to change her. Therapist has a calm, grounding presence. She practices active listening, allowing Lena to sit in her silence until she’s ready to speak.

Ashley is a bright, creative spirit who entered the "Elite Youth" fashion show with hopes of representing plus-size beauty. Like Lena, she was met with the cold wall of Tyla’s prejudices. Because she doesn't fit Tyla’s restrictive "weight requirements," she was not only rejected but made to feel like she was taking up "too much space."

Theresa is the group’s resident "Goth kid," but her black lace, heavy boots, and dark eyeliner are more than just an aesthetic—they are a protective layer. As a member of the same group therapy session as Lena, she shares a deep, unspoken bond with her. Theresa has been a primary target for Tyla, who mocks her for her "weird" style and her dyslexia, often calling her "slow" or "creepy" to maintain her own social status.

Erica is a brilliant student with a fierce intellect, she was relentlessly bullied for being a "nerd"—but unlike Lena, who initially retreated into herself, Erica fought back. Her reputation for getting into physical fights stems from a "zero-tolerance" policy for disrespect, leading to a cycle of suspensions and a seat in Dr. Thorne’s group therapy alongside Lena and Theresa.

We need extras for the school scenes as well as the fashion show tryouts. Probably up to 30 extras.
