About the project: With music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards and a book by Peter Stone, the show is set in the summer of 1776, when the nation stands on the brink of declaring independence, but only if the founders can overcome their differences and unite. The action follows John Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania and Thomas Jefferson of Virginia as they strive to convince the members of the Second Continental Congress to vote for independence from British rule by signing the Declaration of Independence. “1776” is a funny, insightful and compelling musical drama with a striking score and legendary book. The show is directed for MAR by David Halliwell with music direction by Andrew Gadwah. Additional info: Please prepare selections, one ballad and one uptempo, in the style of the show(s) you are auditioning for. You may choose to sing from the show you are auditioning for, though it is not always recommended, depending on how “specifically” the actor wants to be seen. Singing a selection from a similar style, or based on character type, gives directors/music directors a chance to make an open decision based on a number of available roles to fill.
